I have my older sis visiting home from Mainland US and she wanted to go up into the mountains for a hike into her old stomping grounds. I decided to turn it into a bamboo shoot foraging trip. First day I selected relatively short hike along the Pu'u Ohia trail in the Ko'olau Mountains above Honolulu.

First days pickin's of bamboo shoots a tad meager which was expected since the best month for harvest being July. I used my Japanese Hori Hori knife designed for the purpose of harvesting wild mountain vegetables.

What do you use the shoots for? There is s'posed to be lots of bamboo in Texas. I just never looked for it while down there.
Sure is some great scenery. Ever see any snakes on your hikes.

My first bamboo foraging trip post I was not too successful in locating many bamboo shoots but I had a wonderful hike with my big sis anyways. Next day with my son joining us my sis and me were much more successful in locating bamboo shoots this time in a different location: Nu'uanu Valley halfway between Kailua and Honolulu. This time we were much more fruitful in our efforts collecting over 10 pounds of Bamboo shoots in less time, very fertile grounds.
We also went to visit the ruins of the old summer palace of King Kamehameha III just a short distance away. The palace was called Kani-a-ka-pupu which translates to "Singing of the land snails" and was built in 1845.

Here's some wild bamboo shoot "menma" I made. Now all I need is a hot bowl of ramen to throw some on. :32:

You just basically boil them for about 90 minutes in water traditionally with rice bran added to help remove any bitterness. You can also use baking soda. Boil with husk on. Let cool in boiling liquid then peel off the husk. You can slice up and use in your favorite stir-fry recipes. I made a big batch of "menma" a condiment used to top ramen noodles. Basically bamboo shoots simmered in shoyu (soy sauce), honey, sesame oil, and chili peppers.
Only snake found here maxes out at 6 inches and feeds on ants.

Beautiful...Wonderful....My duty at the 25th ID, Scofield Barracks was unpleasant, but the beauty of the islands helped make up for it..... I sure loved snorkling/lobster hunting.
Thanks for woking us through the cooking procedure...

Now I got a stupid / silly question.
You remember the TV show Hawaii 5-O? Is there really such a law enforcement agency called that?

No, But there are allot of bad actors from the mainland and Australia trying to act local and failing miserably (won't get into the writing).

I thought you had moved to Maui. Did I miss a post where you moved back to Oahu?
When I joined the forum back in early 2003 I was living on Maui. After my parents passing in mid 2007 my siblings requested I move back to Oahu to take care of the old homestead until it sells. Been here on Oahu since the fall of 2007.

JI; Where the brown snakes at, that were infesting Hawaii? When you say throw some hot Ramen on them, you don't mean the "cheap" package of noodles, what is Ramen?

Bill in Oregon wrote:Ji, those shoots do look lovely. Are they tender? What's the flavor like?
They are similar in texture to asparagus- soft but with fiber. They taste like bamboo shoots flavored with shoyu, honey, chilis, and sesame oil. Can't say it tastes like anything else.

All flights from Guam are thoroughly checked as is every flight leaving Guam for Hawai'i. USDA doing a great job keeping their invasion of Hawaii in check.
I throw the menma bamboo shoots on top the noodles not the other way around.

I haven't heard of this movie before. Thank you, I'm getting it ASAP.
Another great Japanese film with ramen in the theme is "Ramen Girl" starring Brittany Murphy, one of her last films before her untimely passing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0806165/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 An American woman is stranded in Tokyo after breaking up with her boyfriend. Searching for direction in life, she trains to be a râmen chef under a tyrannical Japanese master.
Another great Japanese movie this one with a Udon (thicker noodle) theme is "Udon" (2006) about the relationship between an aspiring comic and his stubborn noodlemaker father: http://asianwiki.com/Udon
