94 as a Trunk Gun?

Anyone have any thoughts on that? And if so, how many rounds to put into the tube? I don't know about the constant pressure of the magazine spring eventually pushing the bullets back into the brass.

The 94 will make a good "trunk" / truck gun. The most common caliber will be the .30-30 .
I doubt there is any reason to worry about those bullets moving especially when talking factory ammo. Load it to the brim and don`t worry abut it.

I have a .30-30 mdl 94 "Trapper" as my truck gun; with it's 16" barrel, holds five rounds in the mag, and have never had a bullet pushed into the case. I also carried a 20" carbine as my long gun in my squad car in the '90s in place of the shotgun. Like my shotgun, I never needed it... but it was there!

IMO, a good choice. It'll reach out there beyond where a shotgun or handgun will.

The tips of the bullets tend to flatten out a bit over time (like years), but it doesnt seem to hurt anything.

I've kept 94s as truck guns for years, and have left them loaded for the most part as long as I've had them, that would be over 25 years or more for several of them. No problems other than the bullet tips.

We had a '94, on two nails over the door in the kitchen for as long as I remember, tube stuffed full and an empty chamber. She never failed to this day, although covered with dust and kitchen grease. That 1924 carbine took everything from woodchucks to moose, but mostly put down farm critters for the pot, ran of a two legged critter or two over the years also as the stories go. Never a cartridge issue or a spring problem. Always functioned as needed! You got to love old US engineering and manufacturing!
I've got a '94 AE trapper as my "bump in the night" gun now. I expect the same from it.

My only concern would be a loaded weapon issue. But then again I am in California.

Where legal it's a great choice. Like Griff, I currently have a trapper 30-30 Mdl 94 as my truck gun.

In general I prefer a 92 in .357 as a truck/trunk gun but I guess a .30-30 will do.

In WA, I we can't have a loaded rifle/shotgun in the rig......A convenient truck gun for me is my every day carry....When hunting the back trails/logging roads, I have a couple in my hand for a quick load....as soon as I get it sighted in, my mag. fed Ruger Scout will be the in rig choice...just a second to pop in a ten round mag. and have an extra mag or two on me.....

When I was growing up in S. Fla just about every pick up in the county had an easy rider rifle rack in the back window with a '94 hanging on it. At times when a rifle was missing it looked out of place. A very few trucks would have a .22 and even fewer a shotgun of some kind.

They worked fine then, it should be fine now.

Short coach double------with some double 00 at the ready!
Or a Sub 2000 .40S&W with a loaded mag or two (on hand)at the ready.

It has to be a "trunk gun" because it's a Honda sedan. I was using a Mosin 91/30 for the task, but it's kind of long and not as easy to get out of the trunk.

The nice thing about a levergun as a trunk/truck gun is, that like a pump shotgun, when the action's cycled to load the chamber, everyone within earshot will know you mean business (gunwise or not).

IIRC, under the law, it's called an "escalated warning", used before shooting.

IOW, the "other party" was properly warned to desist ("fair warning" if you will), yet still proceded to attack with bad intentions, etc, etc, etc.

Same here in the "Aloha State" illegal to have a loaded gun in a vehicle. My truck gun was my single shot 357 mag Rossi but I only shot pigs and goats nothing that was shooting at me. A removable box magazine rifle may be a better choice if you need a repeater to get into action quick and the laws in your area don't allow a loaded gun in vehicle.

I use my Rossi 92/44 mag as my Truck gun. It rides in a vintage saddle scabard.

In the 1970's the Arizona Highway Patrol discontinued the use of the Winchester 94/30WCF as the Patrol Carbine trunk gun. A Friends BIL was a Commander and was given several saddle scabard. I received one as a gift. It is 50-60 years old and in excellent condition.

The 94 is a very good choice for a Truck/Trunk Gun. My preference would be a Trapper.

94's or 92's are my favorite truck/tractor guns. They go everywhere I go and have come in handy on several occasions. Never had a problem with bullets getting pushed back into the case and despite my concerns a flattened out nose doesn't seem to have much, if any, effect on practical accuracy.

My worst enemy for a truck gun is a light coat of rust in the winter, that was after a 94
laid there 4 months buried under extra clothes & sleeping bags, little steel wool after the fact
& it turned out fine, its my only 94 that gets abused & heavily used
never no worry bout ammo or a spring
