Civil War Knuckle Duster

Post by Sixgun »

Well, its actually made right after the Civil War. Its a very cool gun that belongs to my bud, Tommy at Targetmaster. The caliber is 22 Short, is silver plated brass (frame), hand engraved and has a patent date of 1865. The condition of this gun is amazing, showing virtually no wear. The mainspring is weak and you will see I had a hard time of getting it to fire, plus I had issues with the cylinder revolving. Anyway, heres a short vid I made. I even did a "Pitchy" thing and made a Japanese boat, complete with a flag. "I" was the battleship New Jersey.

This gun came with NO barrel. Shoots right out of the cylinder. And.........the reason it's called a "Knuckle Duster" is because after you p-ee the "victim" off with tiny .22 Shorts, you hold the gun with your little finger through the hole in the frame and whack 'em on the head. :D

Its a little tough doing a video and shoot at the same time. I'm half Italian and did not think it through all way. But........you will get the "picture". :D --------------Sixgun

I like the weapon. Can you get a mainspring made to make it more reliable when shooting? The old weapon have style and class that you don't see anymore. One shot, one kill is all you need. I like to waste bullets too, but nothing beats that one perfectly placed shot to take out the target. Today kids see these Hollywood movies where thousands of shots are fired and think that's cool. They don't think about if you do that for real what a mess it would really make. And lets not even talk about the fact you never see the reloading.
But the weapon was great and loved the video. thanks Gator.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of good to better stuff that seems to keep turning up in south eastern PA

Most of the stuff I saw in north eastern PA had been cobbled up or worse

Yea, I got a little ahead of myself. I was supposed to get the thing working, test it out and then give it back to Tommy. I was in a big hurry to make my Steven Spielberg movie. I eventually got the mainspring tighter by putting a piece of wood behind the mainspring but I never could get the cylinder to turn reliably. As it was not my gun and I'm not a real gunsmith, I was scared a bit to start hammering on the hand to lengthen it. The hand is only about .050 thick and 150 years old so I stayed away from it.

Besides, I believe these guns were made as novelties for rich guys of the time and were most likely never made to be a true defensive gun.-------------6

Six,

That water you folks have in the southeast sure looks badddd!

If you are going to "shoot" a sequel I have the perfect pond for your movie. Clear, not too deep and no neighbors laughing their a$$e$ off.

I don't know if that was supposed to be a serious clip or intended as a comedy but I enjoyed watching it. I suggest you brush up on your Japanese accent before shooting the sequel. One question. Is it very hard to align the sights through the viewfinder of your camera?

Seems sensible to just have a 'long cylinder' instead of bothering with all the mechanism and gap of having some dinky little 1" barrel. Adds a tiny amount of weight is all. Love to see a modern-steel one in 22 WMR.

I've seen one on a poster I had of old west guns 20+ years ago, but never knew one that existed in real life (outside of maybe a museum). I don't think they were ever particularly widespread.

With a weak mainspring like that, a fellow sure wouldn't want a pack of wolves closing in. He'd wear his thumb out for sure. Great video! I'm thinking a 50-110 would have for sure taken care of that boat.

Hello Jack,

I will not be at the Regionals nor the States. My silhouette shooting is in the same place as the Japanese boat you demolished. I get to a few matches at CSLC but nowhere else.

I am still casting, loading, and then shooting at my local club though. Also, my son bought a small piece of farm property and we're going to put in a range later in the summer. That will be time well spent. As far as I remember his plans do not include having a rock range but some target frames and also a few steel targets. If you're ever in my neck of the woods contact me and I can arrange a tour.

Frank

Funny, I remember Sharon Stone from the movie but completely forgot the little revolver. Who cares anyway? Lets talk about Sharon Stone.
