Range Frustration!

Post by C. Cash »

You ever have one of those days? I guess I set myself up. Wife on her 5th day of the deadly flu and I decided I couldn't take it anymore...I was going to the range whether I had child care of not! Loaded my 3 boys in back of my extended cab Dodge truck.....took 6 test 44 Mag. loads with 250 Keith's loaded up and 7 356 Win. rounds for the bb94. "No problem, I'm only going to shoot 13 rounds." The roads were really bad, muddy and washboard...baby crying, kids yelling. Got there and decided that if I was gonna shoot, I better shoot quick! The 356 Win. rounds printed 4" low for some reason. Most went almost into the same hole but what the heck? I had some oil in the bore but that one had my scratching my head. Maybe the way I was holding. Then, 6 rounds of the 44 Keiths. One shot and the range officer pulls up and said he's closing the range. He was nice, but it was obvious that he wanted to go home. Took two more shots and my target blew off. I could tell the kids were killing each other in the back seat of the truck so I threw my hands up and drove the screaming kids back home as quickly as possible. Mom said there would be days like this.......... At least I got to burn some powder!! Also, the Keith rounds landed really close so it looks like it's gonna be a winner in my Flat Top. Thanks, had to get that out. Feel free to let this rotten post slide off into oblivion!

I say, "Good for you"! Come on, admit it...even the worst outing at the range...no matter how short...is better than nothing! :D

You got out and did something. Now get back home and take care of that wife of yours!

Yes I have, many times actually. I find the best thing to do is drop everything, and try again later. Heres to a better day the next time out C.Cash, it will be better!

Thanks for the encouragement fellas. Things are already looking up. Now I'm gonna go out and clean the old Flat Top and remember my Uncle for a while, and think of the better days ahead. Many thanks and God Bless.

In a few years the kids will be older, and they will want to shoot WITH you, and that will be a bonding and educational experience for you both. Savor it when it comes. Maybe by then the wife will be finished with the 'toddler years' and able to dabble in the shooting a bit herself...

Well done Mr Cash. Keep smiling. Bet ya kept your muffs on for the journey home
I allways light my pipe after moments like these
That odd shot you had made me test and test my trapper recently only to find I had screwed up the loading and it did not like the powder I was forcing on it but yours may just be the circumstance you shot in but yep it does niggle at ya

Thank you fellas! AJMD429 Yes...my wife loves to shoot and I can't get the 10/22 away from her at the range. My 2 oldest boys also when I don't have the baby. Family is where it's at for me except this last time I was greedy and wanted to do something for me !

Nath...yes Sir, I could have easily worn those ear muffs on the way home for sure. My oldest has mild/moderate Autism and loud noises that he can't control REALLY bother him, so he had them on the whole time, while I use my Gucci earplugs(moistened toilet paper  ).
I did drop the charge down from 41.0 gr. of H4895 to 40.5 gr. and I guess that could have caused such a drop....I figured half a grain would not do that but that might well be it...that and I was on the plinking range with those terrible picnic benches that you have to hunker down over. I will shoot again on Saturday and reshoot my original 41.0 gr.

Many thanks again for the encouragement fellas. :D

Say Mr Cash, my recent trials with my trapper also revealed how I had to really pull the thing into my shoulder to aid in producing less fliers so with you mentioning crumby benches

Yes Nath....I am often tempted to touch off my 94 while holding it lightly, and you get exactly what you describe. I will keep that in mind at the range on Saturday for sure. Thanks!

I had to learn to shoot all over again when a Win. BB .375 came in to my life. They all can be laws unto themselves. 1886.

Absolutely! It doesn't leave any marks, like 550 cord.
