Savage 99 rebarrel

Post by 30hrrtt »

I have a Savage 99 in 308 that I really like but the bore is shot. The throat is a little more than .4" and worn in addition. I have played with it for a couple years but the best it will shoot is about 2" at 50 yards and that's not even consistent. I have gotten one hole 50 yard groups with a cast 311041 group buy sized at .312 and seated out to just stay in the case but that's not an ideal hunting setup.

I have a couple options. One is to have it rebored to a 358 which I am considering and the cost from Jess is $225. In addition I would need to get new dies and bullets.

I am wondering about a 308 rebarrel as I have thousands of components and it is plenty sufficient for what I hunt. Anybody know of a gunsmith that I could talk to about getting a new 308 barrel.

Anybody know of an extra 308 or 300 Savage barrel laying around.

A gunsmith shop will want around 500$ to put their own barrel on and headspace it. You could get a barrel from midway or brownells and have a smith turn on some threads and install it, a contoured blank is around 150-180$ or keep watch on the auction sites for a used barrel. McGowen barrels in Kalispell, MT. is re-barreling a 300 to 250 savage for a friend their 6 mos out on work but they do good work on 99's. danny

This is no help but I am amazed that someone could shoot out a .308 barrel in a 99. He must be one tough hombre as it would take probably 10,000 rounds.

If the throat is like you say, just use a round nose bullet with a fat ogive and seat it out as far as possible-----------6
