"New" gun...Marlin 336 SC, .35 Rem, 1950...just bought it.

Post by dogngun »

The SN prefix is G, indicating 1950. The SC model "Short Carbine" has a 3/4 length mag tube and a 20" barrel, plain walnut stock with a fat fore end. The blue on this one is great considering its age and the wood is very high quality.

Just brought it home this morning. It has NO scope mount holes. I have ordered a Lyman peep sight and a new replacement butt plate for it, as well as a new mag tube spring.

I really like these - I have had A few of these oldies over the years, in .30-30 and one in .32 Spl but never in .35. I understand there were not many made.

I saw it yesterday, and had to buy it today.

That's a nice one sir. I once knew a fella who had a Marlin lever in .35 and he never felt like he needed anything else. I think they are a sharp looking outfit and frankly though some differ I don't mind the magazine not extending the full barrel length.

Also, what are you doing with my dog on your couch! If that's not mine then its a clone or a long lost sibling of mine.

I've kinda been hankerin' fer a .35Rem myself. Just cause. Arleady have a .356, but... dang...

Was gonna ask if that was the first critter you took with your new gun, but some locals are sensitive.

Nice looking dog. Seems well rested.

Is that a scar on that poor fella's head or just an odd angle for the camera shot?

Now, that's the ticket! Great find and a mighty nice example of a fine caliber and platform.

Those are gorgeous rifles. I personal have never seen one in 35, only 30/30's. Does it have the wavy lines (waffles) on top of receiver. Where did you find the buttplate?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Wow, great find great gun. Those are a very fine handling gun IMO. There is one locally for sale, not as nice as yours. I think that would be perfect with a Lyman peep.

Like Pisgah , The SC`s are my favorite configuration for a hunting rifle.
I have several and my .35 is just like yourn. :D
I believe they started d&t ing. them in 53-54.
The lever contour looks like early 50`s. Here is a close up of mine.
Note the change in the levers shape over the years.

Mine is not a reblue. They are hard to find in near new condition because they were made to be used and most were. I looked for 3-4 years to find a nice SC in good condition.

.

FWIW, Mark - "SC" doesn't mean "Short carbine", it stands for "Sporting Carbine" , and 1950 was the first year that Marlin chambered their Model 336 leverguns for the .35 Remington.

Here's a period ad, from a sporting rag of the day.
