Really nice. Both groups would have brought home the venison or pork. How many groups of each did you fire, were the 150's consistently to the left? How different does it feel cycling the lever compared to a round bolt 30/30 ?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
Very nice ! But....... It's a sacrilege to shoot jacketed in one of those old birds ! You need a Ranch Dog 311-165GC mold and cast your own ! That bullet with 20-22 grains of XMP5744 is awesome or atleast it was in the 8-10 Marlin 30-30's I tried it in !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Generally the old 1893's are a bit smoother but then they've usually been cycled more and a but more worn/used so that would make sense . I will say however the old Marlin 336SC's I had cycled as well as the 1893's I had !

That "goofy looking guy" sure does have a nice rifle there.
I agree with 6pt-sika on cast bullets in that SWEET rifle but wouldn't give up on those 150`s quite yet. Those groups are not that much different.
I would figure out why you are getting the horizontal spread first. For me it is usually lighting when using iron sights. Try them both again under different conditions of lighting and temperature before giving up an any one load.

The 4 shot Remington group shown was shot from the bench.
I then shot one 3 shot group sitting on the ground.
Then I shot one 3 shot group standing off hand.
The 3 shot group shown was from the bench using the Federal 150's.

Yes the Federals all seemed to travel to the left for whatever reason.

Do ya have a couple boxes loaded up that you want to sell me.
The action cycles great.
The trigger pull is absolutely sweet on this o'l girl.
I wish all my rifles had a trigger pull like this one.
I'm more of a Winchester guy, but those 1893 Marlins sure catch my eye. There's just something thrilling about shooting a vintage rifle, no matter what the make. Thanks for posting the pictures!

Old Savage did a velocity comparison on several 30-30s some time back with different brands and weights of ammo.
If I remember what he posted, the Federal ammo was doing from a 20" barrel what the Winchester and Remington did from a 26" barrel.
And the Federal 150s were the fastest from all the barrel lengths he used. I'm thinking the barrel vibrations from the Federal ammo just didn't match up for the best accuracy.
Personally I'd use the R-P or W-W 150 or 170s and go bust a Bambi with that fine old rifle.

I'll second that one......311.......21.gr.........gc.......
Doing the above will allow you to shoot about 20 times more than what you did. I could not imagine shooting 1 box of ammo at a range session.
The rifle looks good. How's the bore condition and the crown?
You need to drink several cups of strong black coffee, no sugar. It will put hair on your legs. ----------Sixgun

If I had any I would give them to you !
But back when I sold off my last Marlin in 30-30 I sold off all my dies brass and molds for the cartridge !
I still have a pre teens Winchester 1894TD in 30 WCF but that ones got a sewer pipe for a barrel . So I only shoot jacketed in it !
When I was still doing 30-30's a had a circa 1906 Marlin 1893 in 30-30 I got from Collectors Firearms in Houston . That one was darn near brand new and virtually unfired . That one liked cast bullets quite a bit ! Now some one in TN has it or atleast thats the way it went when I sold it !

The bore & crown are absolutely pristine on this one six.
If someone told me it only ever had a few boxes of rounds
fired through it over her lifetime, I’d believe them.
Go over to the cast boolits site, ranch dog is getting ready to make a run on his 311-165 mold. Go to the group buy section and you will see the add. It looks like they will have enough to get the molds at a real good price. Kool rifle I wouldn't mind one like that in a 32 win spl.
