Historic Steam Powered Sawmill Video

Post by Shasta »

I generally try to keep my posts on topic, but this is something I thought was worth sharing. This video is over a half-hour long, but if you are interested in old time sawmills and finished wood processing, it gives a good overall look at an historic steam powered operation here in Shasta County, California:

Looks like hard, but honest, work.

Very interesting.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Nope, never been there, but I drive past that Bullskin Ridge area several times a month heading up to Hat Creek Rifle & Pistol Club east of Burney, CA to shoot lever action silhouette matches. I really should go see that operation.

Thanks for the link. it takes me back to my childhood growing up in the country. Where I grew up there were some old operating saw mills, sugar cane syrup mills and Grist/Cornmeal operations. Some were converted to electric, some were converted to gas or diesel .

Neat story; wish they'd showed more detail on the actual mechanical workings of the mill though.

I know what you mean. Do a Google search for "Phillips Brothers Steam Sawmill" and you will find several YouTube videos that show the machinery in action, but there is very little detail on individual machine set-up, or how an operator determines when and how to proceed. I suppose most people would find such detail boring, but I think it would be interesting.

The last steam-powered timber mill in the U.S. is here in Oregon:
