45 Cal .452 250 gr HP XTP® Rifle Data
Hello:
I have looked in the Hornaday #8 reloading manual and they only list data for the 225gr FTX. but not the45 Cal .452 250 gr HP XTP in the Rifle section.. any ideas?? pet loads??Also In the hand gun section they show the 45 Cal 250 gr HP XTP,, for TC and Ruger,, I was thinking, I should be able to start at the lowest listed there and that would be safe in my Interarms model 92 with a 20" barrel What is your opinion??
Thanks
David

You can use the 35K PSI loads in your 92.

The TC/Ruger-only section will give you what you are looking for. Your 92 will handle any of the recipes you find there. Certainly, a starter load will be safe and very easy to shoot, and the velocity increase from a rifle barrel is eye-opening.

The XTP is not designed to expand in loads that slow so no data is given by their maker.
So step up to Ruger only level and have fun.
Same with the 300 gr. XTP Mag. bullet. It `s designed for the .454 and .444 so no data there for the lower levels either.

What is the minimum velocity for these bullets to expand?

Hornady once had a chart on line for all their XTP bullets. I can't find it at the moment but I have a copy.

So if I read the chart correctly the impact velocity would have to be about 800 fps. to initiate expansion?

The Hornady load manual #9 lists the .452 250gr. XTP as having a range of 800-1600 fps for dependable expansion. Not many SAA loads can do that @ even 25 yd. without pushing pressures into the danger range. I shoot them out of my Ruger Redhawk at 1150 or so without to much recoil and no extraction issues.
