Hollywood is a BAD influence!

I was doing some housekeeping in the 'puter room Saturday evening and scrolled through the channel listing to see if there was anything interesting I could use for background noise while sorting and straightening. For a Few Dollars More was about half over and well...I didn't get much accomplished. The hankering for a shoulder stocked Colt 1860 came back as well.

Then Sunday evening I ran across The Professionals which I'd never seen before. Again, I caught it about half over but I stuck with it and decided to record it when it came back on a couple of hours later. My plan was to watch up to the part where I came in before but, well....I watched it all and it was way past my bedtime when it ended. And I spent most of Monday with a hankering for a Win 1897 riot gun so I could play the part of Lee Marvin.

Monday evening I decided to watch The Patriot for the first time (yeah, I gotta stop finding things to keep me entertained in the evening ). I recorded it a couple of weeks ago but haven't had time to watch it until now (I know, I'm a bad person ). So it was another late night and I have the urge for a flintlock pistol like the Dragoon Colonel used.

So in the space of one weekend Hollywood has cost me sleep and will probably cost me money. Sneaky, lousy bastiges...

On the other hand, a friend loaned me a copy of "Secondhand Lions. I still have no desire for a bi-plane... but, then again, there is that yacht for the stock tank!

I'm pretty sure The Old Man gave me a copy of that but I haven't watched it yet. Isn't Michael Caine in it?

"The Patriot" was the first DVD I ever owned. I've watched it many times. I must admit, I was darn-near balling in the theater at several scenes. When Mel Gibson's character lost his first son, and then lost his second (sorry for the spolier for those who haven't seen the movie). But the worst was when his daughter, who hadn't spoke to him, begged him not to go again. Yep, very moist eyes at that point!

Michael Cain is probably the best actor of "our" generation.
If you haven't seen The Man Who Would be King, it's help with another wasted afternoon - I think the best roles for him and Sean Connery both.

Hollywood (and TV), in general, have always been pretty laughable when it comes to accurately portraying the facts with guns, but there is no doubt they've had a big influence in the development and popularity of sporting guns. Think about Bill Ruger breathing new life into the single action world as a result of America's love affair with TV and film westerns. Anyone remember how nutty it got trying to get a S&W 29 after the Dirty Harry movies? How many Sharps repros would be floating around, now, without Quigley? Let us not forget what Jeremiah Johnson did for black powder sales and so many more.

BTDT, sort of...I horse traded my buddy out of his .45-120 Pedersoli several years ago. Unfortunately I had to part with it a couple of years later when things got real tight around here for a while but I have plans to replace it with either another 1874 in .45-70 (maybe .45-90) or an 1859/1863 just for something a little different. Someday....

Why not? If an East End Cockney (I may have my metaphors mixed so to speak) can play a stereotypical, upper crust Leftenant as well as he did I figure he can play pert near anything well!

BTW I played it safe tonight. I recorded Blade Runner several months ago and finally watched it. Eh, it's OK. From what I've read, the 2007 director's cut is supposed to be better than the version originally released.

New war flick - to me - "In the Company of Heroes" - I think probably one of those straight to DVD things. Not to be confused with efforts like Private Ryan, Pacific and Band of Brothers, still not a bad yarn. A little short on story and character development, qnd too much shot in the dark, it does have Tom Sizemore (Ryan) and a passle of actors you sort of recognize but can't remember names of (director said they tried to gather a bunch from past iconic war films). Essentially it's the partially true story of some platoon remnants from the Battle of the Bulge, getting new orders mid-retreat to pursue a mission (ultimtely) to track down the German scientist helping--under gun--the Nazis develop their own atomic bomb.

A little license was taken on weaponry (unexplained, several GI's wielding Enfield/03 types--versus Garands--as if they were issue, and shorty 20 rd mags on Thompsons when 30's were by then the majority by far, etc. You wonder how this stuff happens. Also, some unnecessarily exaggerated/swoopy CGI of (not to mentioon too low flying) B-17s and P-51s - for dramatic effect. Didn't they learn from "Pearl Harbor"? All that said, filmed realistically in mid frigid winter in Bulgaria, worth the $1.50 or so Red Box rental!
