I have never seen one ,or even a picture of one ,but I read that Mr. Gatling made a copy of his gun that used loose powder and ball. Kinda like an automatic muzzleloader. I have no idea how or if it worked.
Anyone seen this? :?

Is it worth it to you? That's the question. Is this just the projectile or the entire round? If the entire round what is the condition?

The book "Rapid Fire" by Anthony Williams contains a photo of a 1" Gatling round (the caption also calling it the 25x88R, although I think it was also called out as 25.4mm), and the sparse information supplied lumped it in the "naval weapons" category.

(The entire book is an entertaining read if you have any interest in "the development of automatic cannon, heavy machine guns and their ammunition for armies, navies and air forces."

"gun that used loose powder and ball" Gatling's first gun used chambers that had a nipple for a musket cap on the rear. These were loaded with black powder and a mini ball and fed through the gun like a cartridge. I have seen a reproduction Civil War Gatling fired against a Gardner gun in a demonstration. Both guns went out of action due to powder fouling very quickly whit the Gatling lasting a little longer than the Gardner.

I would think $115 would be very reasonable for complete 1" round. How bad do you need another paperweight?

Was there also a 37mm Gatling gun? Was watching Pawn Stars and they went to NM or CO to a dealer who had, and let them pop off of about 5 rounds of it.

You may be thinking of the 37mm Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon.

Heck for $115 you can get a whole box of .22 LR's.

I was at the Brooksville Raid, a reenactment from the War of Northern Aggression and there was a fellow there that had made by hand a .58 cal Gatling gun with the hand loaded ML cartridges. It was beautiful.

Rafter, my question is whether that shell is considered a DD or not?

That's one reason I inquired as to condition...
