Browning 1886 are these really worth it?

Post by Old Time Hunter »

From time to time I have posted references to my Browning 1886, mostly because of both the times that I have attempted to fire it, it was plagued by "light" firing pin hits.

Now granted, it has been fired once that I know of. After the first time I had an issue, it was taken to a gunny that specializes in leverguns. He juiced the pin and fired it, handing it back to me and saying there was nothing wrong with it.

A few years later I decided to take it out once more since it is such a good looking gun. Again, no fire, light hit on the primer. Put it away for another three or four years.

Anyway, received a call from a friend of mine this evening and asked if I would sell it. Says there is someone he knows that would give me at least $1500 for it.

Is that realistic? Still in the box it came in and still looks like this.

That's a great price for a rifle you take out of the safe every 3-4 years........Yup.:)

You don't like it, and that is a fair price.

FWIW, I like mine, never had an issue with light strikes, bought a 71 and like it. Mine are BROWNINGS not the later Winchester guns with the rebounding hammers.

I'm on my third one and never had a problem with light strikes. That sounds like a good price for it although I traded a carbine for a pretty nice Colt Bisley a while back.

Have both the Browning 71 and 86 carbines. They are up there with the pre 64 94s and original large frame winchesters. Looking at the current made japchesters, I take a used Browning over a NEW japchester site unseen.

I am not a gunsmith, so the question about the primer strike is something I can't answer. The fact that it is a Browning, looks NIB, is enough for most to think that the price is worth it. If you don't want it and don't use it, might as well sell it and use the money for something else. Is there any particular firearm that you want? Here is an opportunity to obtain it.

Browning? Should have no problem with light primer stikes. Great gun. LOVE mine, never had a FTF. Wincester marked Miroku... with it's rebounding hammer. No thanks. $1500, is a fair price.

Saw a Browning SRC go for $2050 on gunbroker on 2/28, another SRC for $1575 on 2/26, a rifle version for $1750 on 2/26. Prices going up, glad I got mine for $600 years ago NIB.

1500.00 is a fair price in my opinion.

Interesting...appears my buddy has a motive.

Since it has been in the box since new, and only fired once (other than possibly at the factory), is this still considered 100%?

BTW, it is a rifle 26" barrel.

Hobie, have the matching Browning M71 too, still have not taken it out of the box other than to take a picture. Here is my M71:

I had a problem with light strikes on my Browning 71. Diagnosed it as a slightly bent pin and corrected it. Shot great after that. Only sold it when I found a High Grade later.

I don't know why the price on these spiked very recently, but it did. Up 50 to 100% over a year ago.

i believe your guns are just pouting and lonesome , cause you dont take them to the range, or out hunting......they think you dont love them!

they are like good hunting dogs.....they need to get out of the safe and do something :)

you have some fine items there!

Wow! I guess I haven't been following the prices. However, it is to be expected as the dollar is worth less every day.

My SRC had no light strike problems for the 1st 10 years of shooting, then did have some light strikes. Come to find a little bur in the hole where the firing pin goes thru. I also had it cut down to shotbun buttstock with a recail pad. Much more comfortable to shoot with better lengh of pull. I have been keeping track of the Brownings recently on gun broker, hoping to find a bargain on a rifle version. Me thinks the bargins are gone.
