OT- problem with daughters house gun

Post by gon2shoot »

My daughter bought a NEF 20ga single (used).
She took it out and found it wouldn't fire, said there were no marks at all on the primer.
I haven't had one of these ant won't be home again for a couple months.
Do these have fireing pin problems?
Easy fix, or send her money for somthing else?

Give these guys a try. They are to Handi's what we are to leverguns.

The first thing I would look at is to see if the hammer block drops when you pull the trigger, or if, somehow, the trigger is getting glance and the hammer ain't making contact?? Or not.....

I know virtually nothing about Handi Rifles, but is it possible she has the safety on and the hammer is dropping against the safety block?

JReed's link is THE place for H&R stuff. Their single shots have a transfer bar, and it sounds like the one in your daughter's 20 gauge is not rising when the trigger is pulled. The people at GBO have discussed this, if I remember correctly.
Addendum: H&R's are pinned together and require some gunsmithing skill to work on. Quick fix would be a trip to WalMart. New NEF 20 gauge singles are $104 (just bought one for a grandson). Once upon a time, I worked for H&R, but that was back in the days before the transfer bar...

It has been a long time, but I remember soon after the H & R guns went to a transfer bar system, the transfer bars would break. Get her to look in there and see if the bar looks and acts like it should. I read a story not long ago in which a man was taking a few Handi's to Africa and he was taking a few extra transfer bars along.

Don't know how much your daughter knows about her handi, so this may or may not be a dumb question.
Is she aware that the handi is not self cocking, and after she loads it and closes the action she must manually cock the gun.

...Send her the money for a new one from Walmart. As Airdaleman said, they are a bargain there. Too much of a bargain to be buying a used gun to depend on for defense!

If the transfer bar is ok make sure she isn't snapping her finger onto and off of the trigger.

If she is off the trigger before the hammer drops all way the transfer bar won't be there to strike the firing pin.

I had the same problem with nearly the same exact firearm. Was a dirty firing pin channel. Pin wouldn't go all the way home.

Yep, sounds like the transfer bar, she said she can see it move but it only rises about half way.
And yes I know you like my 2-holer but they dont make those any more.
