Just stood on my front patio and watched seven mule deer bucks stroll across the former horse pens on the south side of my property. And I'm in the city limits! OK so a question for you hunters: Why all bucks? Is that common? They were being "led" by the largest, a beefy fellow with broad shoulders and a big rack (some of the others were slight - looked like does with racks, but none of them were less than a 4 point), was that guy some sort of herd leader?
Wish I'd had my camera at the ready!

I think about 90% will shed before the middle of March, around here it seems to depend on the weather. If we have a real cold spell in December and January they tend to shed sooner. But as of the 23rd of Feb. there are alot of bucks still packing around here.

It's regional , down around Tucson they don't rut hard till December- January ( Desert Mule deer and Coues deer).
I have seen a Little Coues deer packing both antlers in April, this one buck was memorable he had found him a patch of blue morning glory's and had them wrapped around both antlers, pretty strange site.
I have seen plenty in Velvet in July---- September.
