Dwight Yoakam

Post by olyinaz »

Someone had asked recently about Dwight and what he's up to, and it just so happens that he's got a new album out for the first time in years and has been making the TV and Radio talk show rounds, so he's clearly still fully in the game. I heard him on the radio just a few days ago and it was a very nice interview. I saw this clip from a recent TV interview while watching a clip on YouTube that someone posted here. He addresses guns with that British jerk Piers Morgan (may he choke on a bad banger), or I should say tries to but Morgan keeps cutting him off. At any rate, since someone raised his name I thought I'd post this:

I'll have to try to find some of his new songs on the radio. I always liked his music.

I find iheart radio or pandora radio are better than regular radio, you can set up stations that feature a particular artist. You can download apps to your smart phone and as long as you have wifi you got your stations. There are a lot of talk radio stations there also. Directtv has pandora and what I set up on my pc or phone are automatically set up on the tv if you have your unit connected to the internet.

It's gotten so that about all we listen to in the car anymore is Pandora. Love it.

Several ways to connect a cell phone, iPod, iPad or other device to you car's radio. Also many of the new cars have built in internet connectivity - simply pair your device with your car! I understand some dealerships are running classes to teach customers how to use their "radio!!"

Dwight is my favorite country singer. He has been recording great music for almost 30 years. When he first got started Nashville was in the Urban Cowboy phase and wouldn't give him a look so he went west to California. Nashville has now completely sold out and is recording country music in name only. It is nothing more than pop musice made in Nashville. I tried to watch some of the CMA awards last year because I heard they were going to do a tribute to Earl Scruggs (may you rest in peace Earl) and I watched it for a while and gave up. I did not hear or see ANYTHING that even resembled country music while I watched.

Dwight continues to make excellent honky tonk and country music but it does not get played on commercial radio. (XM Radio is the exception, both for Dwight and as a place to hear REAL country music. As mentioned earlier, Pandora and LastFM on the interenet are also excellent). He still sells CD's to his legion of fans (I have all of his CD's except the newest one, which I will have to rectify). I saw him in concert a couple of years ago at a sold out show in a casino in Biloxi. He still has it.

Dwight was influenced greatly by Buck Owens and he and Buck became great friends. They recorded together over the years and made some great records. Dwight made a CD of Buck Owens' songs after Buck died. He said he waited until after he died because he felt he couldn't do justice to the songs and didn't want to disappoint Buck. The album is fantastic by the way. Dwight gave a moving eulogy at Buck's funeral. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMBabhl6mZY

He also acts, directs movies, and is a songwriter. When I first saw him act in "Slingblade" I didn't recognize him without his cowboy hat. He is as bald as I am! But much more talented. Buck told him, "Keep the hat on!", so he wore it at Buck's funeral to honor Buck's request.

He's more of a traditionalist as far as country music goes. Saw him a number of years ago at The House of Blues and he put on a fantastic show. Gonna see him later this week up in a casino in MN. However, I'll bet he doesn't quite look the same as he did in 2005. Why for that fact, neither do I

Another listening suggestion is Grooveshark.com . They pay royalties to the artists, stream music without Pandora's commercials, and you can create huge play lists from their streaming library. I have found TONS of obscure old stuff to listen to (things I meant to hear decades ago, even) from big names, scarcely knowns and everyone in between. The web browser shows a few banner ads, but they're all polite and strictly controlled - no popups, noises, etc.

I highly recommend Grooveshark - I found it has a lot more depth of material than Pandora (which I also like).

But when I want to say, "Gee, I haven't listened to Dwight Yoakum in years," I can bounce to Grooveshark and select ALL of his material and listen 'til my ears go numb.

In my Jeep there are two ways. First, I pull up Pandora on my iPhone. Then, I either plug my iPhone into the USB jack in my Jeep's center console, or I connect via Bluetooth and stream it from the phone that way. I usually use Bluetooth because the phone automatically pairs to my Jeep a few seconds after I hit the start button so it's already set to go, but Bluetooth can be a bit cranky some times and get all messed up (skipping and cutting out), so it's nice to have the hard-wire backup. The USB connection charges my phone to boot!

It's a 2011 model Jeep and I think most newer models have this sort of thing, but if you car doesn't have any sort of connectivity there are several aftermarket solutions. Just see your car sterio install shop (Best Buy for example) and they'll suggest some solutions.
Cheers,
Oly
