It is a .38 Special.
I really don't know why Colts made any of the other calibers

Without the other calibers I wouldn't have a 44spl 7 1/2 in. and a 38-40 or a 44-40.wait, i don't have a 44-40, I have 2 38-40s.

Nice looking Colt, mine is a 57 model 5 1/2 inch .45 I bought it in 1959 only had 12 rounds through it.

Very nice pistol and pic. I'm sure glad Colt made those 38s, it's how I get cylinders to re-chamber to 44-40.

I'm down at the gunshop as I type. I took the gun apart..........very carefully...........The serial number is 558 numbers away from Bat Masterson's gun. Pics are taken and a post will be up later tonight. Price???....don't know yet as my bud is not sure if he wants to sell it. Its 100% original, which is extremely difficult to find in a gun of this era. I'm guessin' 8 to 10 g's. Till tonight......................Sixgun

I'm thinkin' the Mrs. is gettin' a pair of mdl P's for our 50th anniversary. "Presentation" mdls, 4-¾", .38 Spl. Engraved on the left side of the barrel: "For 50 Years of Wedded Devotion!" I'm undecided on whether to add, "Or Else!"

Rare "4th" (late 3rd) Gen ca 2008/9 "discreet" .44 Sp. (not .44-40 w/ .44 Sp spare). I've only seen one or two others advertised, those from same distributor over a few years' time. It's a gem. Having seen/handled dozens of 2nds, this seems up to them.
With the New Frontier revamped in .44 Sp, I don't expect this rarity to last, but checking the website fairly recently, Colt still didn't list .44 Sp in their catalog for the fixed sight SAA. AFAIK, not since the "no removeable bushing" 3rds (pre 2003).
