Howdy all, a have a question hope im in the right section please bare with me I'm new. I'd like to buy a new Marlin GBL or SBL, but in doing research I'm seeing that Remington has really messed up an American legend, makes me sad, I inherited my fathers 336 .30-30 which is an awesome gun, I had the privelage to go on several hunting trips with my father in the early '70's to Colorado. This fine gun has taken many a deer and an occasional elk or three and even some pheasants my old mad was a hell of a shot.
Back to task, has the quality improved is it worth it? I recently bought a Rossi '92 in .45 colt and I am really impressed with it, there are some ugly quirky things the safety and loading gate, it does have some feeding issuses, but all in all I'm happy with it would trade it off makes a good companion to my Ruger .45 Colt.
Any info or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time in advance

Re: A new Marlin GBL or SBL?
If I wanted a tricked out Marlin these days, I would buy one made before the change and do the work myself.
Laminated stocks are available as are the Wild West big loop levers as well as custom sights and rail systems.
Heck, Wild West Guns will make you a take down if you want one.

If possible, get one you can handle before finalizing the sale; MOST of them are just fine, and the design is wonderful. SOME have minor rough-spots that you can deal with in 30 minutes with some fine grit paper or a stone. A FEW are hopelessly messed up, but a return to the factory with a letter from you, and you'll typically get a better-than-average one back.

I looked at a SBL last fall at a Sheels store in Springfiels Illinois. It was a good looking gun. Me and the ol boy I was with gave it a good look and decided maybe Remlin was turning things around. They had a zip tie around the stock and through the loop so I couldn't cycle it and I wasn't planning to buy it so I never asked to remove the tie, but judging by the looks I thought it was good.

Marlin Suspends Production
I mentioned this around three weeks ago and got flamed in some places, but here is the word I got today from a large Marlin distributor:
Marlin has temporarily suspended the production of the following lever action firearms:
338MX
338MXLR
444
1895G
1895-COWBOY
1895XLR
1894CB357-20
1894CB44-20
1894CB45-20
1894CSS
1894SS
1894SBL
1894CSBL
Please suggest an alternate model to your customers during this suspended production period.
Production will resume once they fill the production requirements for the rest of their lever action product line.
I do not know when production of the above models will resume.
So there ya go guys, case closed for a while, hope they get their act together and get us the full line of Marlins again
Thank

Re: A new Marlin GBL or SBL?
The only Remlin I've handled was so bad even a blind QC person could have found the problems. Big deep tooling marks on receiver sides and big gaps between wood and metal. Pretty much the norm at the time from everything I was reading from others around the country. Rumor has it QC has improved. I suspect that when Rem first took over they just sent anything they could put together out the door. That left bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Not really a Remington fan anyway so that just kind of cemented my feelings towards them. Pre-Rems are around, check Armslist etc.. I suppose if you have to have one and its all there is that you will eventually be satisfied one way or another by Remington, but who wants to deal with all the sending it back etc.?

As sad as this sounds I would say neither. George Soros contorls Cerberus Capital which controls Freedom Group which contorls Marlin Firearms, and Remington, and Para Ordinance, and DPMS, and Bushmaster and others. He is antigun.

There are other AR-15 makers, and other (gulp) leverguns, even, but I really love my Para Ordnance, and would buy another if I had the spare change...Blackhawk wrote:George Soros contorls Cerberus Capital which controls Freedom Group which contorls Marlin Firearms, and Remington, and Para Ordinance, and DPMS, and Bushmaster and others.
