Stainless Steel or Blued
Hi guys - getting close to buying my first Rossi Ruma. Should I go for Stainless Steel or Blued? And there are two kinds of bluing as well!
Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
get whatever you can, if it´s a nice gun without safety.
IMO they don´t make them in the same quality anymore.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
To me guns are blued steel and walnut. Beside my old Winchester 1892 32wcf, I have an early Rossi 92 in .357 and a Rossi Hartford 92 in .45 Colt to match my old Colt.

My philosophy is:
- if I'm going to sweat on it, I get stainless
if I want it to look pretty, I get blued, but...- ...plan on lots of 'fondling' and cleaning after each use
- ...blued-but-rusty looks worse than stainless

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
I have had both and it was nice not to be concerned about the stainless.
Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
If ya get the blued one it will look like stainless after you wear all the blue off of it.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
stainless is for bolt guns with plastic stock; go for the blue and walnut.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
All mine are blued, but I would echo the comments if it is rainy or particularly humid where you are (and I would think it is) - stainless...and think about the matte (having it beadblasted - Steve Young (NKJ) does this) to reduce glare.
Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
Mine was brushed stainless.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
Great replies guys. Is the standard stock on the Rossi walnut? Have some stocks been known to crack?

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
I've got three Rossis. Ages run for the mid '80s to about a 2005. Nary a crack in the lumber. There has been some shrinkage on the newest, but that's only in the area in the toe of the stock. (about a 1/16").KiwiKev wrote:Great replies guys. Is the standard stock on the Rossi walnut? Have some stocks been known to crack?
I don't know that their stocks are walnut, but rather some mystery brazilian hardwood. Grain and color vary quite a bit, so they're usually stained on the dark side. I've seen some that have been stripped of this finish and are quite good lookin'. Others, not so.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
Given that a platform is "readily" available in SS I'll take that. But if I find a platform I like and finding SS would mean extra diggin and possibly a wait I'll settle for blue.
Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
As mentioned, it's a personal choice. Mine happens to be stainless. I like to look of stainless and solid wood. Plywood or synthetic stocks just looks cheap to me.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
Finally arrived today. I purchased .38/.357 mag, blued, 24 inch octagonal barrel with no safety. Hope to take it to the range this weekend. Dark walnut.
So how does it work? The half cock thing? Also does the firing pin have a spring or is it lose? I am very interested in the mechanics of this action.
Kev.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
Ive only got a few leverguns (will have to do something about that situation). All but one of them is blued. One of my Marlin Guide Guns is stainless with laminate stock. I don't mind that at all, when up here in the Pacific NW it often rains a lot.
I like blue & nice walnut - but have various handguns, rifles, and shotguns which fit into the 'really nasty weather' category. On 'those kinda days' the blued guns stay at home and the stainless ones get to play.

Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
I believe the only factory Rossi claiming (correctly) to be "genuine walnut" was the relatively short-lived Navy Arms - late 90s/2000-2006 or so? All no safety btw.
Re: Stainless Steel or Blued
My 92 is blued. As far as it goes, I got mine in blue because that was what was in stock.
