Winchester Model 1873 at Shot Show now on youtube

Post by kaschi »

I just ran across this short video of Glenn Hatt from Winchester showing the new Model 73. Go to youtube.com and type in "Gallery of Guns-Winchester Model 73" in your search (do not use the quotation marks). The segment runs 2 minutes. Among other things Mr Hatt says that shooters will be pleased that the new 73 has a half-cock safety and there is no tang safety which is still found on other Winchester rifles! He sounds happy saying that, as he should, but gave no information that those items (tang safety/half-cock safety) would be on the other levers in the future. He did say that many have been asking for the return of the Model 73 and there would be more to come indicating other calibers. This year's is a short rifle with round barrel and is chambered in 357 Magnum.

"We kept it as true as possible to the original configureation".  . Too bad they didn't figure that out with the rest of their Leverguns.

Yep, like all their leverguns. Built by Miroku of Japan. One of the premier gunmakers of the world.

Still wish they had made the initial run in 44-40. It would have been the perfect match since it was the first chambering in the 73. Wonder whose idea it was to make it in 357 Magnum? Probably the same guy who hatched the plan to make that batch of 1895s in 270 Win.

Make my 44-40 in a 1/2 round, 1/2 octagon rifle or a SRC and I will be very happy!

That's a pretty nice looking gun. I would rather have a 38-40 or 44-40 but the 357 loaded down a bit would work in a pinch.
The $1300 price tag is my whole gun budget for a couple of years.
I suppose that I could sell one of my soon-to-be-banned EBRs for enough to cover it though :x

I suspect they introduced it in 38/357 so they could sell a lot of units. That caliber is very popular with the cowboy action crowd who will be snapping this one up. I personally love the 44WCF, and believe it to be the perfect caliber for the 1873, or any other levergun, but it is way out of the mainstream - even with cowboy action shooters. They are just going where the market is.

That said, you can count on seeing this rifle in a variety of configurations and calibers - provided they sell enough of this one......
