Yesterday's Bobcat (Not With a Lever)

Post by InTheWoods »

I was calling coyotes yesterday morning and this cat came running across a bean field toward the electronic caller. Kind of caught me by surprise. One Hornaday .223 55 grain V-Max from about 80 yards stopped it quickly. Bullet went in the neck, exploded inside the animal, and cause zero external damage. While quite a few bobcats have been trapped in our Missouri county this season, this is the first legally shot by hunting methods and tagged so far.

Nice kitty. Has anyone here ever tried eating a bobcat?

Thanks, all. The rifle is a Sako 75 Hunter with a 1 in 12" twist. It has been my favorite coyote gun for years. I use an AR on occassion, but find I can shoot the Sako more accurately and make ACCURATE follow-up shots just as quick with this bolt gun. I think it is because the stock fits me MUCH better than an AR stock (50 years of shooting tradition rifles), the Sako action is unbelievably smooth, the bolt lift is short, and the trigger is great. The feeding is so smooth than you really can't tell if there is any ammo in the magazine or not.

Never tried it, but it is pretty meat.

I have boned out a many one for my hounds in my other life.

One year I made a bunch of fish jerky out of trigger fish, and took some with me to the fur auction in Globe AZ.

I had a shirt pocket full of cigar size pieces and as I was talking to folks I would be munching on it, they would ask me what it was, I told them Bobcat jerky want a piece, I had no taker's.

No, assuming it's similar to cougar it'll taste much more like pork.

Good shooting. What county? I see a few each year on my place in Texas county. Oh and I guess you didn't get the memo. Gen. McChcrystal said that the .223 was much too powerful for hunting, and no one uses an AR-15 for hunting either. :)

Thanks for the feedback. The cat was shot in Montgomery County and, believe it or not, I neglected to weight it before taking it to the taxidermist. I guess that way I can estimate its weight  at about 55 pounds! Actually, the photo makes it appear larger than it is. It looked much smaller on the tailgate of my truck. I doubt it's weight was more than 25 or 30 pounds (?).
