Tried to go shooting today ...

Post by Rimfire McNutjob »

Well, I almost made it. My daughter and middle son wanted to shoot some stuff so I loaded up her .22 CZ and a Colt AR shorty and headed out. Problem is, I forgot to throw the ammo in the car. Shouldn't be an issue ... there's a Gander Mountain on the way.

Zero .223. Less than zero. As I was looking on the shelves, I had people ask ME if I knew where they could get some.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I just haven't been paying close attention to all of the hoopla as I stocked up back in '94 the first time around and haven't thought much of it.

I'll make another run at it tomorrow but this time I'll be sure to remember to throw a battle pack of Hirtenberger SS109 in the back before I head out.

If it's near $1 a round, it may be time for me to part ways with some of this M855/SS109.

I paid $297 out-the-door, for this same bulk pack less than 4 months ago. Panic buyers

Wow, 90 cents a round for regular 55 grain FMJ. I guess I need to list some stuff.

I wonder if primers are next ... again.

McNutJob,
Shame on you!!!! Forgettin' ammo!! YOU NOW HAVE 12 DEMERITS :D

Only place on the East that has every kind of .223 ammo is...........Targetmaster. Along with an "X" amount of Colt LE AR's in the back, he's the only one that I know of thats still well stocked. People have been coming from 500 miles around just to get their goodies. ---------------Sixgun

Took an elderly friend dove hunting at the ranch recently. He brought his .270, but forgot the shells.

Around here in NW Wisconsin, primers are affected already. My neighbor tried to get some the other day at the local gunshop---nothing---so the dealer called around to different distributors---nothing---. So, good luck on primers. In the past, prior to and during the first "administration", I bought up all the Wolf Large Rifle Berdan primers that I could find (I load Berdan also) and snagged many more regular primers than I needed right now. I'm set on primers. .22 caliber ammo should also be a consideration. Found a 1953 manufactured Marlin Model 39 with Ballard rifling to go with the ammo... So I can sort of relax now but I am always keeping my eyes open for more 'stuff'.

Made it to the range today. Daughter shot about 40 rounds from her CZ 452 Scout. My 16 year old son and I went through a 200 round battle pack of Hirtenberger in about 15 minutes out of the CAR. Resulted in a very hot barrel and a lot of perforated laundry detergent bottles. I hope I can remember how to clean that thing. I haven't had it out in about 10 years. At a buck a round, I don't think I'll be taking it anywhere regularly.

He took a .270? Just how big are your doves anyway?

He meant to bring his browning auto shotgun. His wife of 54 years handed me a gun bag, I put it in the truck. Despite a great dove season, there were no birds to shoot that trip. We gave him a bad time about it then, and we still are.

That's a GOOD thing - Since, IIRC, doves are legally Migratory Game Birds, protected just like ducks, and can only be legally taken with a smoothbore/birdshot.
