Powders For 25-06, and .308
Being lazy, I like to keep reloading supplies to a minimum. What do you think about H322 for .308, and Winchester 760 for 25-06? I see published loads for both, but, the 760 is used for the lighter .25s, and not the heavier 117 or 120 that I'd like to use. I'm flexible on the .25, but, I have 16 pounds of H322 and would really like to use it (it's for the Ruger Scout, so, I doubt if I'll need match-grade accuracy)

You could go really simple and just settle of Rl 15 for both.
Generally like 748 the best of all of them in the 308 tho..

Well 322 for the 308 - apparently the bench rest guys like it - according to Hodgdon max load of 41 gr with a 150 will get to approx 2667 fps.

Vlaine, try GIbrass.com he some imr7383 and wc857 that he says works great in his 25/06. Is $56 and $72 for 8#'s
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Powders For 25-06, and .308
Blaine, I have had great accuracy in both of those calibers using Varget.
In the .308 ,using H322, I found good accuracy also but just slightly
less accurate than the Varget loads.
I have two .308`s that are set up for target competition so the
smallest groups were what I was after. For hunting the H332 loads I
tried would have been just fine.
Have fun!

Best thing you can do is get IMR4350 for the 25-06 , RL-15 or IMR4064 for the 308 and SEND ME the H322 !
H322 has turned out to be an EXCELLENT powder for me in big bore cast bullet loads ie 444 and 45-70 as well as a pretty good bench powder for the 204 , 222 and 223 . I am quite certain there are other areas of loading that 322 is also great for and I've not had reason to try yet . But I can say this H322 is one of the powders that I buy in 8 pounders . So for me it falls in the same category with IMR4350 , IMR4831 , IMR8208 , RL22 and RL7 .And let me say by category I mean amount used !
All of the other 35 or so different powders I keep on my shelf are purchased in pound containers .
Although now that I'm loading a fair amount of 10 and 16 gauge I may start getting SR7625 in larger containers !

I still live in an old world. IMR 4895 gets used in just about case I load that comes with a jacketed bullet, except magnums, which I seldom shoot and when I do, they get IMR 4350.
Cast bullets in rifles get AA 5744.
Cast revolver bullets get Bullseye, Unique, Herco or 2400
There are a few exceptions, but not many.

Exactly my thought, and the reason I got it. R. Garrett was using that for his ammo, and when he switched, he had 16 lbs he wanted very little money for. Being an hour away, I snatched it up.....I saw Varget and will think about it. The 760 might be useful because I got that for the .284....H322 has turned out to be an EXCELLENT powder for me in big bore cast bullet loads ie 444 and 45-70

Blaine,
Back when I first built my 25-06 I developed a load for the Sierra 100 grain bullet and 4831 which was a surplus powder from Hogdon. Didn't have a chronograph but they really zipped. The only deer that went anywhere after being shot was running flat out and did about three cartwheels before coming to rest. Still like that cartridge for Texas/Oklahoma whitetail and pronghorn size game. Worked well on coyotes too.

My 308 like Varget, and my '06 like 4350, most any brand but H the best.

He sold his business.....This was about three years ago, so, if he said what he was using, I don't remember...could have been something special just for him for all I know....handirifle wrote:My 308 like Varget, and my '06 like 4350, most any brand but H the best.

Re: Powders For 25-06, and .308
I've never used WW760 in the 25/06 but I looked at it in "QuickLoad" and it really looks pretty decent. It is among the best powders for the light bullets and even with the 120 grain bullet it only gives up about 70 fps over the top powders (IMR 7828 or RL 25) and does it with 6 or 7 grains less powder.
And if you want to load heavy bullets in your 308 the 760 would be one of your best powders for that purpose.
So I'd say if you want to simplify life, your H322/WW760 scenario makes good sense.
