.36 cal bp ammo

Post by rossim92 »

My son has a .36 cal army or navy bp pistol. (not sure which). He has a hard time finding ammo for it around here , but his buddy has no trouble finding .44 cal for his bp pistol. He was thinking of buying a mold and casting from wheel weights. I was wondering if anybody here has a old kit kit used for making ammo for the .36 laying around. ( books, molds, temp gauge, ladle) that kind of stuff they are not using anymore and are willing to sell. I would like to give to him as a christmas present. He has to buy hornady ammo from cabelas right now. Any advice as to making them too as too whether he can shoot straight lead or does it have to be mixed with other material to harden it a bit. Thanks in advance.. Please email with any offers of sale. :D

Check out midsouthshooterssupply.com , they carry LEE products . You can get a small dipper pot , .375 roundball mould and dipper quite cheaply. Pure lead would be best as its possible to break loading lever with harder alloys.Ingot mould can be a muffin tin from goodwill store.

Pure lead only. The ball has to swage into the chamber to help seal it from the hot gases from other chambers being released at the cylinder/barrel gap. Using a lead alloy ups the pressure on the loading ram and the arbor possibly damaging them. Especially true of brass-framed versions.

Dixie Gun Works will have EVERYTHING he needs or could possibly want for BP shooting. You won't find nicer or more knowledgeable and helpful staff. They've specialized in BP firearms since 1954!

Rossi, both Speer and Hornady sell cold-swaged round balls in .375 specifically for the .36s. You can get them from Grafs, Midway, Midsouth and many other sellers on line. The balls, some black or Triple 7 and No. 10 caps and he's running.

#0000 "4-ought" Buckshot is around .380 in diameter. You find a bag of that, and see if i shoots accurate enuf for him. Ballistic products has it in 8lbs contaiers for $34.90. Could also used in .375 Win and 38/55, sized down and used for squib loads in 38/357. Hhmm think i just sold myself too :P
RE-edited again: They also have Super Buck which comes in .490 and .500 diameters. Never knew these existed till now.
RE-RE- edited: 0000 buck is 6 per ounce, that is 96 per pound, 768 per 8lb container. 000 buck is .360 diameter. 6.25 per ounce, 100 per pound and 800 per 8lb container
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
