The "new" 1886 stocks??

Post by Grizzly Adams »

Anyone know if the new Win/Miruku 1886 stocks will fit the Browing/Miruku 1886?

I am interested in trading the crescent butt stock off my B86 for one of the shotgun type like they use on the EL.

Just another project to keep me entertained! :P

Pretty sure the SGB (from and EL for instance) will fit on the B86 but I doubt the reverse, without some carpentry. I have both and I can check later this evening and let you know tomorrow, if someone hasn't already answered by then.

I fit a SGB stock from the old Columbia Precision on my B86.

It's as I remembered (not bad for a guy that is old enough to hide his own Easter eggs  ). The EL shotgun butt will go on the B86 but not even close going the other direction. There is a lot more wood removed from the EL butt. The fork in the wrist is much deeper to compensate for the longer spring assembly caused by the spring strut/rebound feature. And there is more wood removed to the sides of the tang on the EL to make room for the tang safety linkage. So the B86 action is yoddling in the Grand Canyon as far as room to spare but it would take a chain saw to make the crescent butt fit the EL.

Leverluver, I sure to appreciate you checking that out for me. I owe you a beverage of your choice!

I guess I will need to look for an after market stock. Maybe Precision still has them? :?

Thanks, again, Amigo. :)

Depends on what you have more of, money or time. Unless you can find a "take off", one from the factory will probably be $200++. Several places have original 86 shotgun butts. The B86 is so close to original that I didn't have to do any more work than someone fitting it to an original. About what one would expect from a 95% stock. Unless you want fancy wood, you can probaly get one of those for ~$40. Got to figure what you are going to do about the butt plate though. I fitted a not so pristine original butt plate to mine. Actually the butt plate is the only thing that has any age and character :)

You can get repro butt plates at vintagegungrips.com...they look good enough and then you're not worried about busting it up when you actually use it.

I haven't ever tried one but I intend to get one each for an original 1894 and 1886.

I have a Browning Carbine High Grade butt stock on my Winchester EL, and a Browning High Grade on my Winchester Rifle. The Browning stocks need some wood removed internally, but the inletting for the receiver is fine. I'll take a few pictures later today and add them.

Since Precision burned down, I don't believe they are selling any stocks.

Dang.........been a while since I bought a stock. Prices sure have gone up. You might do just as well cruising the auctions for an EL take off.

The last 86 SGB that I got was from Boyds but it seems that they don't make them anymore.

I swapped a Winchester/Miroku EL stock to my Browning SRC and it fit perfectly. I did it so that the lousy Browning shiny finish could be fixed.

Thanks for the links, LL. That EL take off idea is looking better all the time!

Anyone got an EL take off for sale or trade?
