Another very late post (Jeremy - you'll like this!)
I haven't been able to be here nearly as much as I would like, or normally do. I guess you can think of it as my gift to all of you. Peace and quiet and a chance to catch up on post count!
Seriously though, between dealing with the continuing issues since the car accident in March, and being on the road non-stop, plus all the issues with work (my employer is laying off 2400 people and closing 20 plants, and for the first time in my career, 25 years in January, I was very worried about my job), I haven't been around and I apologize.
I was able to participate in my first Marine Corp birthday ball last month. I think I posted briefly on it - my wife and I volunteered to serve the meal to the JROTC cadets. It was a wonderful ceremony. Here are some photos from the celebration:
Y2K in his dress blues:
A room full of cadets:
The table honoring those who have fallen:
The sign at the event:
The dancing begins. Even Y2K participated a bit - and like his father, he is NOT a dancer!
Everyone got a commenrative coin - including the servers. Front:
And back:
The program:
The Colonel's wife made the chocolates, which were a big hit.
It was a wonderful event. The Colonel said they duplicated the same procedure as every Marine Corp ball everywhere in the world. Tradition has the oldest Marine and the youngest one cut the cake. The oldest was a decorated WWII vet. The youngest was, of course, one of our cadets.
I never thought I'd get to see one of these live. I am so proud of Y2K.

I have attended many Marine Birthday Balls in a ceremonial/musical capacity. No finer group of Gentlemen exist. Also, I don't know how things are now, but in the day, no group of fine men ever partied hardier. Generally, the Band got the same meal the Marines had, and usually, a keg of beer. I remember one such party at the Kansas City Marine Finance Center the head table engaged in a dinner roll battle with several of the closer tables. As I recall, we were given an engraved glass mug which they fill up with scotch as we arrived...I was driving the army bus that night...a very challenging ride back to Ft. Leavenworth.

Cool glad you all had a good time. As Blaine pointed out the grown up versions can get a bit lively once the ceremony is done . I only have 3 left on active duty

Congrats Jay, that is really cool!
And congrats to Y2K as well, he looks like a fine outstanding young man. He's good looking too -- takes after your bride, eh?!
Glad to hear things might be OK on the job front for you.
Oh, and I recognized that NCO Sword on the table too -- looks just like Gunny Reed's!
