Post by 3leggedturtle »

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Always had hoped, that Ruger would have made the Model 96 lever in .22 Hornet.

Sure does!

I've had both along with a K-Hornet. The .218 is just as accurate and has a bit more range.
I was shooting at some 1/8" pieces of angle iron with my .218 Bee Martini at @80-90 yards, Thought I was shooting too high because I saw the dirt kicking up behind them. Turns out I was dead center of the 8" blocks and the .218 was drilling through like they weren't even there. Did the same thing with my .222 Rem Sako with an even cleaner hole.

From a case shape standpoint and ability to handle any type cast bullet I'd agree with you fellows. But they never chambered the Hornet in a lever (a lever-action repeater, anyway). It's just gotta be in a lever to have a crack at the 30/30 of 22 center-fires title.

So the Bee gets my vote, no contest.

The .30-30 of .22 centerfires?

That would be the one that everyone says is old and underpowered and can't kill anything tougher than a stale bran muffin?

... and everyone still buys it anyway because it just plain does the job?

Never seen one in a levergun but I think the under-appreciation still goes to the .223.

Good points.

I was just thinking 'Hornet' because the .218 would be more of a .308, with the .223 a .30-06, and the .22-250 a .300 Win Mag.

Naw, the .218 is the .22 CF .300 Savage. Excellent and underappreciated.

I think the .22 Hornet is the .30-30 because, among other things, it has virtually the same trajectory. So, when you're beat down by the recoil of the .30-30  , you can shoot the .22 H. And when you're tired of the recoil of the .22 H, you can shoot the .17 HMR (same trajectory again).

Also, the .22 H greatly outsells the much better .218, just as the .30-30 greatly outsells the much better .300 S
