A few. Why would we be talking about them here though?

Next to a nice longrifle, there is nothing that quite feels as nice as a levergun in the hand. It's just old enough a design to feel our forefathers when we carry it through the woods or desert, but still "new" enough to hold off a small army of badguys and do it as fast and well as anything out there.

OI: Yeah most of us end up back full circle, wishing for the simple little rig that we started off with or something very much like it. Lust and a wandering eye gets us everytime!

Beautiful GK.......very nice!
The trapper is a Wrangler in 32 special ($150).The Big Bore is a 356. I also picked up a 307 about 4 years ago but never found an accurate load for it until this year. Max load of LVR and 170 gr Fp shoots close to MOA. The 356 is my favorite deer gun, with the 338 MX a close second. But after 30 years of buying levers I decided I need to whack a deer with each one, so the 356 sits for a while.

About half of those guns cost me less than $100, with the 356 costing me the most because I could not find one locally. After reading your posts extolling the virtues of the 356, I went on a quest and bought it off of gun broker about 8 years ago. Since the picture I've added Marlins in 338Mx, 444, 45-70, Rossi 357 ($190) , Ruger 96 /44 . But I also have some 94's I've built , 38-55 octagon barrel, and 25-35. The 25-35 barrel is pre WWII and it is on a post 64 receiver. It shoots great , but I need to find pre 64 project gun to put that barrel on so it looks right.

I travel for work and hit gun shops along the way and stumble across deals, they are not all pristine guns , most show normal use . I like the tactical shops because they price levers cheap, because who would want those . So its easy to accumulate these things. The Rossi 357 out the door was $190. I wasn't looking for one but I figure I can always get my money back out of it,plus it's fun to shoot.

I am so glad that 356 Win. worked out for you Ben! They are addictive. After killing my first Hog this past month with mine, I am anxious to take a PA deer this year with it. Very confident in the Beartooth 210 gr. cast bullet over some IMR 4320.

speaking of...

The local Toy Shop has an unported 1895 GS on the consignment rack for $575 Cash.

Not as good a deal as when I bought mine there, but it looks to be a pretty solid piece.

Anybody interested I can give the shop's number.

Those are all so nice, and having your Dad's is truly a treasure. Is that one a 30/30? Something I find oddly appealing about the fat forearms on that era of Marlins.

My Dad's is a 32 Special. I actually prefer the looks of the slim forearm but the fat forearm is very comfortable to hold when shooting. I really like the rifle; he had it tapped and had see through rings and a steel tube 4x Weaver on it ( I think in 1964). I saved them but put the Williams 5D on it. He grew up in south Louisiana, Abbeville - Vermilion Parish, and always used buckshot, either 16 or 12 gauge when deer hunting. He bought the rifle in either '53 or '54 after he was commissioned as a 2LT in the Air Force (in 1952), he told me that it was the first time that he felt he could afford spend the money on something like that.

Thats a great story....hope your Dad's Marlin makes it down the generations with the story attached. My Uncle had one in 30/30 very much like it but thieves broke in and took it along with the rest of his guns....only his Flat Top being overlooked. The model 39a has that fat little forearm that is nice to hold as well.

Good to see your post Jay.

mack,

Your picture's URL contains a "th_", which designates a thumbnail image. I removed it, and the direct link is below. The fullsized picture is too large, pixelwise, to post as an image, on this forum.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
