Very nice
You're making me anxious to get my 73 in 38-40
back from Redman's. Having the barrel relined.
ETA is Feb. or March 2013.

Re: Picked Up Another 38-40
Your on a roll! Good for you!
That cartridge is the most addicting, next to the 45-70 and maybe the 32-20. I've got 'em in Colt Lightnings, 92's, Marlin 89's, single action Colts, Colt New Services and other junk I can't remember.
Funny thing, I've had my share of 44-40's that would not hit a washtub at 20 yards but never did experience that with a 38-40.----Sixgun

Re: Picked Up Another 38-40
Good score!
The 38-40 is my favorite of the pistol class cartridges. I have found it much more consistant from gun to gun in what it takes to shoot well. I have seven in 92's, 73's and 89 marlins and all will shoot the same cast load very well.
All my 44's need something different and are more work to get to shoot well.
Looks like thats gonna be a fun one!

What is this cast load they all shoot well, Win? Reason I'm asking is my 38-40 hasn't been anything to get real proud of -- not bad, but a long way from real good. But to be fair to the rifle, so far I've only shot the 180 grain Lee tumble-lube bullet in it.Old Win wrote:I have seven in 92's, 73's and 89 marlins and all will shoot the same cast load very well.

Good morning
Nice looking rifle in one of my favorite calibers. Never have had an 1866 type. Maybe that should be the next trail to head down ?
Mike in ILL.

Re: Picked Up Another 38-40
I'm writing an article on my " Adventure with the 38-40"
The Lee Tumble Lube bullet was the first I tried. The crimp groove is in the wrong place and brass had to be shortened .10" to make it feed properly and not have the bullet fall back into the case in a magazine tube rifle. This was a very difficult bullet to shoot accuratly as no matter what I did they dropped too small a diameter.
My absolute best performance is with the RCBS mold when shooting smokeless powder and the BIG LUBE bullet with Black Powder. Both these molds drop at .4015 - .402. Sized to .401 they are a thing of beauty!
Besides the article being published it will be up on my web site. Stay tuned.........
Hey OldWin......nice collection. I'd love to get together sometime and see them. I'm up in Maine (Dover Foxcroft area) all the time.

Sorry for the late reply. Just using the old lyman #401043 over 8.0gr of unique. They say this bullet will push in over anything but black powder but I've never had it happen personally. I'm casting it in #2 alloy.
