Winchester 94 Sporter at the range....
On Friday I picked up a brand new Winchester Model 94 Sporter in 38-55
This rifle is a thing of Beauty! The Japan Winchester folks really turn out a nicely finished product.
Yesterday I took it to the range to fire for function with it's supplied barrel sights. Performance was outstanding at 25 yards. But I plan on using it for side matches at Cowboy Action Shoots. So the sights needed improvement.
In my junk drawer I had some unknown brand tang sight that wiggled and wobbled and the base wouldn't fit the Winchester.
So out to the shop and my milling machine carved a new base from a block of steel. The sides of the sight was trues and stainless steel washers were fitted ti tighten it up.
I designed the base to keep the tang safety accessible.
The rear barrel sight was replaced with a "flip down" type.
Back to the junk drawer for an old Lyman #17 front sight
And at 50 yards...The proof is in the pudding....
Using a "Period Correct" benchrest and no rear bag.....
250g Lyman cast bullet, 20-1 Alloy, SPG Lube, 9g Unique, CCI Lg Rifle Primer
Oh, and BTW....My Patriots just lost to the freak'n Seahawks?????

Nice looking rifle and good work on the sights. I'd say they for sure are stable!
I have a 26" octagon barreled 94 centennial, in 30-30. Do folks think as a rule, the 38-55 are more accurate than the 30-30's? just wondering.
I was thinking of adding a tang sight to it, for long range plinking.

I just want You to knowthat I am Envious. I know ! I am not suppose to covet another Mans er - Gun but that is My Dream Gun. Nice work on the sight. At first I thought You milled it out to fit over the Safety but closer exam revealed otherwise. Sweet !!!

Re: Winchester 94 Sporter at the range....
the 38-55 was the "Benchrest" cartridge of the 1800s.
I've had a bunch of different 30-30 rifles from Bolt action to Contenders to levers. All shot good, but none were in the same league as these two 38-55 rifles I'm currently playing with.
Lots of competitors in the BPCR game shoot the 38-55. Very few go to the 30-30..........

That closest target board is 50 yds, the farthest one is 200 yds

Nice rifle. Good shooting!
I have come to expect those kind of groups from my .38-55
Marlin. Same bullet and lube but I shoot with 15gr. 2400.

rbertalotto,
Very nice rifle! Very good shooting!
Speaking of 30-30 accuracy, I have a couple of 788 Remingtons that will shoot honest 1 MOA 5 shot groups with the proper cast bullet loads at 2,200 f.p.s. if I do my part.....of course they do wear scopes.
Back in the 1960's Robert Hutton decided to see what the 30-30 could do in a bolt action target rifle. He posted 5 shot groups as small as 1/4" at 100 yards (!). He was using jacketed bullets.....

That's a rifle and load to be proud of. I'd like to have access to your "junk drawer"!

I use that same bullet and load in my 1894 winchester that was my Grandfather's. It was built in Jan. or Feb. of 1904. It was pretty leaded up and I am getting it clean now.
Every so often it throws one pretty far out and I thought it may be too much room in the case allowing the powder to get away from the primer. I have some loaded now with a tuft of dacron in them to hold the powder back. I was just wondering if you have done this?
Thanks
Gordon

I never recommend any type of filler with fast burning smokeless powders. A good way to ring a chamber.
Unique is extremely easy to ignite. I've never seen any large variences in velocity over a chronograph with Unique even in huge cases like 45-70.
