Da Boyz... Now I'm only one gun short.

Post by Old Ironsights »

Someday I'll run across a Savage 99 TD in .308 when I have money. Then I'll be set for life.

Yes, I know the 96/22 isn't "Traditional", but I like the idea of a 50rd mag on a 22.

I love my 96/22. What type of front sight do you have on yours?

Stock. Saw no sense in changing it. It works well enough for a woods gun.

My Target .22 is a 513-T MatchMaster, so there is really no point in trying to get the 96/22 to come close...

I like the nice short lever throw on the 96/22. It is usually the first gun I let a novice shoot (with a red dot scope).

I've thought about mounting a cheap BSA/Crosman holo-sight on it (I have one), just never got around to it.

A utilitarian minimalist collection to be admired. Yes a 99 300 or 308 would round that out nicely.

Was the 86 made with that finish?

O.I. first of all; set for life? Everytime I think something like that I dream up another gun I just have to have. Second, thats looks like a Williams WGRS sight set on your 96/22. I was just looking at these on MidwayUSA for my 10/22. The set can be had with either a fiber optic or a brass bead front sight. I believe the front sight has to be taller than stock for the Williams rear sight to work. At any rate does your 96/22 have a fiber optic front sight, if so do you like it and have you shot it under various lighting conditions. Anyway, nice collection, I just wouldn't be surprised to see it grow beyond the addition of a Savage 99.

It's the Fiber front sight. And it works just fine with the williams... though the williams DOES have to be set about as far down as possible.

Hate to tell you Mr. Ironsights, but you are never going to totally scratch that levergun itch! :D Its a legal narcotic. Back in the seventies I used to tell my wife, "I just need a varmint rifle to be done", or "I have long barreled handguns, so I just need a short barreled snubby".

Anyway, after you get a gun for every need, you begin to say, "Hey, I never had that caliber before, wonder what its like." or you read an article on something new or you can do what my brother-in-law did one time. At an auction he bought 10 boxes of 219 Zipper ammo for a song. So he tells me that he now has to find a rifle to shoot it in.

If guns are your passion, like they are mine, you will make many more contacts and your reputation will grow. Therefore, phone calls will come at 10 at night saying, "Yo dude, you wanna buy a '94 in 25-35 for $300?

Get used to the fact that you will always be cash poor but gun rich :D ---(thats better, isn't it?)-------------Sixgun

BTW, I don't think Savage ever made the .308 in a takedown version.

Maybe... but I'm a pretty practical guy. I have a real tendency to clean out the stuff I don't shoot regularly, regardless of "value".

edit: Though I do hope that someday I can get a 20x20x.357 Drilling made ...

I just hate safe queens.

That's too bad about the 99 TD... maybe I can find a 300 with a bad barrel and get a .308 for it.

Ahh, someday... when I'm not scrambling to buy a $4000 car so I have transportation.

If I wouldn't have had that 410 to trade for the 86, I probably would have just gone and laid down in the middle of I-94.

adding a 99-.308, a 12gauge, rem 870 or a 1887 lever repro, makes you set for anything, anytime, anywhere.

I already have a 12ga M500 with both a riot barrel & a rifle-sighted/rifled slug barrel... and a .50 Flintlock... both in Stainless.

Fifty Round Option

Post by Idiot »

Old Ironsights, who makes the 50 round magazine stuck in your gun? And, does it function flawlessly?

I have a 50 rounder (Ramline, maybe Butler Creek) and it never worked reliably. The Butler Creek "Hot Lips" 25 rounder does a good job in the 10/22 that I converted to an EBG as soon as the ban lifted -just'cause I could!

I'll have to look. I think it's a Ram Line.

I haven't fired that many rounds through it, bit it has worked fine so far.

I know that the "eagle" brand 10/22 (96/22) single-stack mags suck.

OI -

Not to hi-jack your thread, but I noticed the books in your third picture - the last one - just below the muzzle of your 96/22. Would those be the "Star Trek" books by James Blish? I can't make them out - but they sure do look like them! :D

No, then you will discover the Browning BLR, or find out how cool is a Winchester '95, or find a great deal on a Marlin 39.

I knew it! Reason I recognized them is that I finally have room to take out a bunch of books I've been lugging around in boxes for years. I just took mine out last week. Have to be about 30 years old. :D

Big Mags for the Rugers

Post by Idiot »

Thanks Old Ironsights and 20cows; I need to pick-up a couple big magazines for my Rugers.

I wish there was some way to stuff more rounds in my Nylon 66. It is the best shooting, easiet carrying, and most durable 22LR I own. I'm thinking about rigging up some "speed feed tubes" for it. Then at least my reloading can be quick. Anyway, another project for another time.
