I Spent Some Time In The Company Of Soldiers

Post by Blaine »

This is the small Ft Lewis, WA Cemetery. Until yesterday, and after 25 years, I didn't realize it was there. Out of the way and quiet, I sat on the bench, wandered around, read some names, and honestly, I couldn't keep my eyes dry the entire duration. What a perfect place to spend eternity. I hope they have some room there.

It does look like a lovely and peaceful place.

I hope fine men really do RIP.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Spent some time at one near by on Memorial day.

Always a quiet and respectful place for me.

Had a couple of hours before plane flight. Wanted to see Patton's grave. Didn't know German word for cemetery so I could ask taxi driver, so I asked in French to go there and then what the German word was.

Told me it was Friedhof -- peaceful place.

The local cemetary has quite a few vets, including a couple of generations of family. They do a really nice sunrise ceremony on Memorial day and Vetrans day. But, from time to time, I swing by the VA cemetary in West L. A. It's pretty humbling experience to read the names and dates, especially when I come across someone of my generation. Makes one feel might mortal, yet being among those who also served is comforting.

Most civilians will never really understand. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen, have done what they have done and for the most part just wanted to come home and keep on keepin on. Sadly, many never came home. But we are who we are, as a people, because of them.
