Jacob's first bear
Just got back from an awesome four day trip with my 13 y/o in northern MN. After three days sitting in his stand, he got his first bear.
He's shooting a Marlin 336y youth model 30-30 that I happened to spot in the gun store the day I went to buy his license. Jake is pretty small for his age, but that little rifle fits him perfect. He practiced shooting almost every day for over a month before we left. He has shot shotgun and thousands of .22's, but this is his first 'big' rifle. It took a little time, but after a few weeks, he was texting me pictures of nice little 2" groups that he had shot.
The bait had been hit already when we got to the stand, but the bear came back around seven pm; he grabbed a donut out of the bait box and was just walking away when Jakey got him. He dropped about 10 feet away.
I am very proud and thankful I got to be there with him for his first bear....definately worth pulling him out of school for a few days. Pretty sure he learned more in a few days in the woods than he would have sitting in school staring out the window.

Way to go Jake, now next winter you can set around the house with your toes curled up in a bear rug and drink hot coco.

Way to go Jake. You have one on me, I have never had a chance to shoot a bear. I have seen them, but never when it was legal to hunt them.. You have done good, enjoy it, and I hope you have many more chances on another bear..

What a great way to start a lifetime of hunting, and with an old 30-30.

Great Job Jacob, I suspect the bucks in the area had best keep their heads down this season!

Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes.

That's a pretty big smile on the boys face, so I'm guessing he got something positive out of it all.

Re: Jacob's first bear
I would say he started out doing three rounds at at time....working his way up to maybe nine or ten. He was pretty diligent with the practicing....he was out there probably five or six days a week, sometimes twice a day.Nath wrote:Thats .

Jake was ten when MN lowered the deer hunting age to ten a few years back and was the first of his buddies to shoot a deer, a nice big doe. So he was the hero, til the next weekend when one of his little buddies got a 155 inch buck. But hes up to three deer under his belt now, all with one shot from his single shot H&R 20 ga. He joined the FFA trap team at school this year and had his first shoot a couple days before we left for bear hunting and his second a couple days after we got home. Managed to get a couple 16's....not too shabby for a kid who can just barely hold a youth shotgun. So yea, I'm pretty proud of the little guy.
Thanks for all the comments....I will pass them on to him
Mike
