What would you load in it?

Post by L_Kilkenny »

Gonna be takin my Security Six out to the Black Hills and up thru Wyoming and into SE Montana. Gonna ride mostly in the truck and in the camper (might be doing a little boondocking or dry camping in the sticks) but it may see some carry if we do some hiking. Now everyone of us have certain things we fear or at a minimum feel the need to prepare for. Some worry about snakes, some about 2 legged varmints, some bears, etc etc. Me? The Ruger will be along as much because I can and I want to as anything else and I'm not too worried about what I load for this trip. Still the thought of options comes to mind. Probably just load some 158 .357 HP's in it, possibly 158 .38 +P's. But still I have options, anything from my heavy 180gr XTP reloads to 125gr JSP's (.357) to wimpy .38 plated solids.

What would you carry in it and why?

Note: nothing too serious, just lookin to crawl into the mind of a few genius' :D more so than looking for recommendations. Like I said, I pretty much feel about anything I shove in it will do anything I might need to do but the 158's are a good compromise for man or beast.

158 gr. HP over 14.0 gr. of 2400.

4" barrel? Maybe not too much point
in anything much hotter.

(Feel free to substitute 158 gr. JSP
for better penetrationif you're going
into bear country.)

This is not the hottest 357 load, but it's
controllable and very accurate - at least in
my S&W revolvers. Plenty for social work,
maybe a little light for grizzlies - but in
either case, you'll probably be quite close
to your target!

My (non-genius - sorry!) 2 cents, anyway.....

180gr Hardcast, if you want to be (somewhat) prepared for something big.

158's with a couple backup speedloaders of 180's if you see some BIG tracks.

My "normal" carry load in that would be 2 shot shells lined up to go first, 2 38 specials lead round nose, then 2 158 grn hollow point 357 mag loads. You can do lots of scare with the snake shot loads and if needed just spin the cylinder to advance what youwant to use.

Wadcutters for small game, snake shot for snakes, 180 grain hard cast for all other carry. Have fun.

That's pretty much my loadout too, though in my SP101 I just go straight from the Shot loads to my daily carry Federal Premiun 180 gr sjhp & 1 Heavy. There's a speed-strip full of 1200Fps 180gr solids handy if the last heavy won't fix things...

For a 6 shot revolver maybe 2 snake loads. For a 5 shot revolver only 1 snake load.
I would think there are much better choices than round nose .38s. I use 3.5 BE with 158 HPs in my SP101. 158 LSWC should work as well. Just shot a few HPs this morning. Two of those and 2 158 LSWC over 14.0-14.5 2400 to fill up. You do know when these go off in the SP. :) I have never tried 180 or 200 gr. I have some Federal 158gr SJSP that are very warm in the SP. Get'em at Wal-Mart. Many many choices, These work for me and my situations. Fun to choose, ain't it? :D
