This particular piece strikes me from two directions.
One is profound thanks for the courage of a peacemaker.
The other is a wonder at the strength of the human spirit that always seems to rise up in adversity to build new hope and new dreams using the ruin of what has failed as a foundation.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Jim.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Yep - largely ignored by our local newspapers who all insisted Jeanne was officially a "security guard" when, in fact, she and a few others with concealed permits were unofficial volunteer security persons.
Both our local Gazette and the Denver Post lost no time printing an AP story listing the five gun dealers where the nut had legally purchased the guns. They listed the stores by name and address and the stories gave the vague impression those gun stores were, in essence, complicit accomplices of the killer for selling those guns to him.
First amendment OK, Second amendment NO.
Also brought up the rapid response of the police within minutes. Can't deny - when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Thanks Jim, I know this might be a popular opinion but I've come to think lately that some of the victims that are often over looked in these shootings are the parents of the shooter. It could happen to any of us as well. The father of the Ill. shooter lives about 20 miles from me. After the shooting the local news media tried to have a news breaking story and they put this poor man on TV standing in his driveway pleading to just be left alone. MY first thought was pity for the man. the second was rage at how uncaring the TV station was.

Maybe above it, put
"When your life is in danger, don't dial '911' - use 1911 - and it isn't long distance..."

The parents speak to power.
You never WANT to shoot somebody (well, that's not specifically true... you judt don't shoot the ones you WANT to...) You shoot somebody when you HAVE TO.
You should never feel guilt for doing what must be done. Sadness perhaps, but never guilt.
