Sighted in the springfield trapdoor

I brought the TD out to the longer range today and shot it. The range went out to almost 400 yards. Yesterday I had a new crown cut on the muzzle and I wanted to see how it shot. It was amazing!

This 120 year old rifle was right on. The only problem was the minimum range is 250 yards. I need to find a taller post for the front sight.

Anyway, it was awesom. After, I tried out two loads for my Rossi 357, a smokeless with toilet paper wadding and a black powder load. Both shot about two inches at 125 yards which is the most accurate it has ever shot.

Great! :D As to the .45-70, what loads did you use and what were the groups?
Have you hugged your rifle today?

Buffalo arms manufactured black powder. Don't know the groups because I was plinking steel targets.

Once I finish wolfs book, I'll work up my own load and test the groups.

Yeah, shooting an actual old gun well is so much more fun than a replica. I don't know why, but it is.

IIRC..The Infantryman with a Trapdoor was taught to aim for the belt buckle at shorter ranges.

Was the toilet paper single, double ply or quilted? :mrgreen:

Jack, were you shooting the 405-grain slug or the biog old Lyman 457125 "gummint" boolit? Wolfe recommends the former ... I sure miss having a trapdoor.

Bill,

I am not sure. I ordered black powder ammo from buffalo supply, so you'd have to check their site to see what the mould was. The 405 grain bullets were round nose, and the 350 grain were flat nose.

I was able to hit with both, but the 350 s were definitely higher
