307 WIN AMMO

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Bought a box of WW 180gr shells for $17.25. Dont even own or seen one in 7 years. Think I'll mothball it and save for rainy day :P :)
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

A lovely one sat in my local shop recently for months! I groped it many times...just couldn't bring myself to make the move.

One thing I'll say: they put those 307s together with MUCH greater care than the standard 30 bore 94s. Every one I've seen has been really nicely made.

Good plan!! I have dies, brass and two boxes of bullets for 7-30 Waters; now I just need a rifle, or a Contender barrel.

Several years back Paco wrote an article covering the 7-30 Waters which at the time I was obsessed with. At the end of the article he mentioned taking a 307 Winchester Big Bore pulling the barrel off and puting a 7-30 Waters on it and rechamering it to 7/07. Which he would push 140gr bullet to about 3000fps. That was it! I had to have a 7/07! So I started looking for a 307 Winchester. I finally traded a nice Remington 660 in .243 Winchester for a brand new 307 Winchester XTR. I bought some 150gr factory ammo thinking I would try it out and see what it would do. And that 30 cal barrel will never come off my 307 Winchester! It it will push a 150gr bullet close to 2700fps, and a 130gr bullet to over 2900fps. And its accurate to. I have pulled the mote carlo stock off and put a straight stock in its place. But thats just a preference I have. So if you have a chance to get a 307 Winchester, I would grab it!

Yeah, but they don't make 307 ammo anymore that I'm aware of.

Winchester recently announced they would commit to "larger than small runs" of former cartridges on a regular basis, if not annually. They specifically mentioned 7-30 Waters, 375W, 356W, 307W, and 348W. They also listed 25-20, 32-20, 38-40, and others.

That sounds good, just like any dubious promise from an oft unfaithful 'partner.'

If they do come through, I wonder if the retail price will be any lower than the current $50 a box that I see for the flavor that I shop for.

If the price isn't down past half that, I'll just continue to roll my own, thanks.

The brass seems to last forever. You can make it from 444 Marlin bt you need to anneal it.

Johnny, I have not seen your posts for awhile, have you always been in Arkansas?

307 Win is the equal to the 300 Savage. In the 94, you get a moderate range fast handling, lightweight lever for North American Game. Bigbore 94's should have been the HOLY GRAIL for those that love the attributes of the 94 saddle gun. Sadley, not enough 94 hunting Geeks like me exist out there. These 94's should have sold like icewater in hell, But, they didn't

doesn't seem to stop other enthusiasts who shoot a lot of equally obsolete cartridges (.44-40, .45-90, .45-110, .45-65, any Lazzeroni cartridge , etc etc and on and on) just find a couple of boxes of brass and a set of dies and rock on. Something tells me the projectile size will be around for a while
