"American Guns"

Post by Mike D. »

I watched a few minutes of this program a little bit ago and definitely was not impressed. What a bunch of overblown idiots. The main guy, Rich Wyatt, drives an over the top silly looking gaudy truck and builds any kind of stuff that walk-ins who are willing to get screwed want. A "big game hunter" walked in wanting to trade his Weatherby .30-338 for a "long range" rifle. WHAT!?? The moron wanted a 1000 yd "hunting rifle" in .50 BMG. C'mon, what is that? Sorry, but that fool's license should be taken away before he gets any stupider. IMO, that ridiculous show is doomed. Maybe not, though, after all there are plenty of dumb "gun nuts" out there who epitomize what gun control freaks are all screaming about.

He flies to all these places to buy guns and "negotiates" with the sellers (like Pawn Stars). They build stuff for 10X what it the buyer could get one off the shelf and it sure looks like they use the off the shelf gun. The boy is supposed to be a master engraver. I got all that from 20 minutes of 4 different shows. I can't watch more than 5 minutes at a time (about gun stuff!) because I get nauseated.
Sincerely,

Hobie

I believe all gun groups/types should stick together and not pit one against the other - single shot guys, semi-auto guys, shotgun guys, etc. but this guy is a bit over the top. However, he is licensed for everything that he does snf although I don't like half of what the does I gottta support his efforts.

The show is conceptualized, produced, and directed by people who know nothing about guns or people who actually 'use' them.

It is apparently intended to turn gun owners in cartoon characters at the most and to make them fit every available comedic redneck sterotype at the least.

I saw part of it once. All I noticed was that they all argued a lot, and the young girl showed her midriff in whatever she wore. Yawn!

It's obviously a bull stuff show. He flies his helicopter to meet a potential customer to make a buy or sell? What would the cost of fuel and upkeep on a helicopter do to your profit margins? He's also pimping out his 1/2 dressed daughter for ratings. Watch mom and daughter jiggle while they shoot guns. I watched a couple shows, but no more.

I have seen parts of 2 shows. Cannot stand to watch this idiot ripping people off. On the one show he flew the family to a location out west to show a NASCAR driver and his wife a few guns. The driver and wife just wanted, if I remember, a rifle for himself and a shotgun for the wife. I believe the dealer brought 7 guns along to show them. The dealer coerced the driver and wife into buying all the guns! They should have refused, so bad on them. Looked to me to be maybe $5000.00 worth of guns. The dealer ripped the couple off for $25,000.00! Driver and wife should have told the dealer to go ***** himself, but grudgingly bought the whole shebang. This dealer is a total aZZ.
And, I know that gun people need to stick together, but I will never support a leech on society who is only interested in screwing someone out of their money, gun person or not.
Also cannot stand him using tannerite to make it look like the gun he sells is doing 100 times the damage it would normally do to a target.
I am done now, don't want to get too riled up.

Anyone in favor of the show? Anyone?
Seems as if we all agree.
Although, I do think Tannerite is fun, it is truly despicable to use it to rip off someone by making it seem as if the firearm is more powerful than it really is.

I don't think he's ripping anyone off guys --- the show is completely scripted and i sincerely doubt the purchases are genuine -- just made for tv swill.

HE used the chopper to fly out to meet a prospective customer in Evergreen once --- thats when i really smelled BS -- if his shop is really in wheatridge or lakewood or wherever, that would have been a solid 30 minute drive at best . It would have taken longer to drive to the airport, do a pre-flight, and take off -- than it would have to just drive there

He supposedly "made" a SAA from billet (perhaps he did) and wanted 15k for it , and the heavy chested 'ol lady was griping at him for selling it too cheap --- give me a break

but when you look at it from the standpoint of American capitalism and advertising , he's got a good gig goin' on , but CO Steve and a few others who live out there say he's a pompous a-- who has ripped people off in numerous ways in the past (I'm continually amazed we award people like that with tv shows and cash )

So, you're saying its more rediculous than the other "reality" show Red Jacket or some such. That's means it's well into the stupid range.

It's one of the current crop of so-called "reality" shows. Cheap to produce because you don't have a lot of money tied up in talent. Just have to pay for the production crew.

And yeah, a lot of it is scripted, or people put in situations for 'drama' and 'conflict'.

Not my cup of tea. Got better things to do with my life and time.

Redjacket? Yeah, I've seen parts of that as well. Again, more drama and a "hot" mama. Lots of stuff. I understand they've lost their license due to some bone-headed moves and that it was actually held by the tatted up gunsmith they "ran off". The term "reality show" is a misnomer.

I do watch it most of the time. Everything others have said +1. Exploding targets supposed to make a .38 Special Cowboy load look like a bazooka hit it!!
It don't take much to cause me to change the channel like maybe some Mayberry RFD reruns.

I've watched it a few times just because "it was a show about guns". But it's apparent that it's a bunch of BS with large doses of arrogance and drama. The last episode I saw showed some guys from down south who wanted to buy a gator rifle. Rich ended up selling them a Savage 223 bolt gun and scope with a gator carved in the stock for an outrageous amount (several thousand dollars IIRC). Like Hobie said, the same stuff can be bought right off the shelf for a lot less.....
Lastly, every show ends with a "bang" when s/thing is rigged to blow up. That must be to make the buyer think he is really getting more bang for his buck.

I agree with pretty much all of you guys but I've got one other gripe about the show. Like most of you all I could only watch it a couple times before it was obvious that this is a phony reality show. I mean, really, who is going to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for something that you could buy for under a grand ?

But my big gripe was when I saw a "gunsmith" doing things that no rank amateur gunsmith would even think was acceptable. Where are the jigs and fixtures for holding the piece being worked on in a solid fashion? The "engraver" made me cringe, and talent in the place is close to non-existent. But hey, somebody knows somebody, so he's got a "show." Oh boy.

I wish that all of us gun owners were just a bit better represented on the tv but that might be hoping for too much. - DixieBoy

I guess I get to be the dissenting vote! I like the show. I like almost any gun shows. I like "American Guns" much more than "Sons of Guns" or whatever the Red Jacket show is. I did actually stop watching that. I guess I figure that any show that casts gun ownership in a positive light does the cause good, and overall, I'd say the show does show guns and gun owners as positive. I'd love to have the money people do to throw around too!

Of course, Y2K likes it for the guns and Paige. I must admit, she is not hard on the eyes. I guess I'm getting old though when my first thought is "she's young enough to be my daughter" and the second thought (for any young woman) is "would she have potential for Y2K"!

He's a little young for her, but then again, the idea of marrying into a family that owns a gun shop is PRETTY DARN ATTRACTIVE!!! :D

I don't think these shows depict gun owners well at all. They, being depicted by the "stars", come across as ignorant, rude, arrogant, blowhards.

Top Shot and Top Guns are pretty good, and I like the R. Lee Ermey shows (heck, he's playing himself in Full Metal Jacket).

Cajun Pawn Stars does a pretty good job with interesting firearms and their firearms expert has pretty good credentials... Bruce N. Canfield.. I really enjoyed an episode where Mr. Canfield authenticated a WWI 1903 Springfield in a special fixture equipped with scope and remote trigger made to fire over the top of a trench and keep the marksmen below line of sight...It really tickled me that the pawn broker couldn't beat the price down on the owner and had to pay the top estimated price that Mr. Canfield suggested...They also took the thing to the range and fired it successfully..
