Websites you like on subject of emergency preparedness?

Post by Topside »

Recent power outages here in central Va. along with one lasting 4 days last August due to Hurricane Irene have me wanting to be better prepared for the next one. I've recently bought a good headlamp and lantern to get started on this, but after consulting the http://www.ready.gov/ government site where of course they don't even mention a firearm as part of "building a kit", I thought I'd ask you all for a favored website you like on the subject.

To begin with, I'll shoot for being prepared for a 4-5 day power outage. Once I get that done, I'll look into prep for a more serious situation. Any suggestions on a site with a lot of info. on the subject an/or a site that sells what I'll need is appreciated.
Thanks,
Reed.

By the way.......I had a passel of Bass Pro Shops gift cards thanks to the kids so I ordered these two items on line. I know much more can be spent on a lantern and headlamp, but having received these two models, I've found'em to be tried and true in case you might need a new one.

This one has lots of off-grid information - http://www.countrysidemag.com/

Try www.standeyo.com

Stan's wife Holly wrote a book called DARE TO PREPARE. I bought my wife a copy for Christmas last year.

You might also try the website for backwoods home magazine. there is a forum there also as well as links to several blogs.

What I did was take inventory of what my family (4 people and 3 dogs) went through over two weeks of supplies and doubled it.

So far we've never gone without power more than 48 hrs. But you never know.
If I'm at the Home Base I got no worries. If I'm out on business I can be 100+ miles away.
Hopefully I can get myself home. Got my .380 and 12 b in the truck to make that happen, 50 rounds for each.

No, seriously. Good info about disaster preparedness. When something is going on in the world, it's one of the places I go read, they generally seem to have one of the most level headed discussions about events, and good information, often from people in the affected area. Some go overboard on "END OF THE WORLD" stuff, but most seem to keep it all in perspective. (End of the world stuff mostly makes me roll my eyes, shake my head and move along)
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Thanks for all the sites. Just what I needed. Got a lot to learn on this subject.

I read www.survivalblog.com daily. It is mostly a compilation of submissions. Like most of the internet it ranges from very informative to just plain silly.
