Drifting towards a new type of lever gun, shoots a pellet!

Post by Canuck Bob »

I have an order in for a Weihrauch HW35E air gun. The lever is the barrel! I have been toying with getting a serious air gun for awhile. The main reason is to shoot in my basement with low noise with my girls. Also I can buy them non firearm guns with no legal hassles.

We are allowed to own air guns that shoot under 500 fps as non guns in the eyes of the law.

The HW35E is a high end pellet gun in PAL/FAC compliant 22 caliber (firearm restrictions apply). A nice walnut stock, quality construction, and a nice trigger. It will be a gopher killer to about 25 paces I'm told but is a lower power rifle. It will take a Williams Guide Receiver Sight with a replaceable insert front sight. This means lots of cheap practice to stay sharp on my levers whenever I want and no range trip required.

Anyone else play around with these guns?

Never underestimate the value of quality practice time with a good air rifle. At the suggestion of another more experienced shooter I purchased a nice air rifle several years ago when I got serious about shooting club matches. I went from a "C" class shooter to an "A" class shooter in about 4 months. I attribute that mostly to the practice time I spent with the air rifle.

Congratulations! it will be a lot of fun to see the girls improve right before your very eyes. Be sure to save their first targets so they can see how far they've come.

Like Rusty says, practice with a decent air rifle will DEFINITELY
help the rest of your rifle shooting. Great fun, and the ammunition
is relatively inexpensive, too. If you can shoot quarter-sized groups
consistently at 25 yards with an air rifle during the summer, you'll
be well-prepared for the big rifle come hunting season in the fall!

I have two at the moment - an inexpensive Beeman (1000s?) in .177, and
an RWS48 in .22.

Nice one. I have done lots of airgunning this spring and boy can I tell! It has worked wonders for my confidence.

Those HW35's tune up easy! I use to get them in the high 600fps easily.

Congrats. I think you will like it. My weihrauch HW 97k is my most shot firearm. It's a .20 and is shot almost every day. Keeps my shooting tuned up

I have a Benjamin Sheridan .22 which I take hunting to avoid our restrictions on firearms, .22's, and condor requirements. It's my #1 life taker and is dead-nuts accurate. It was purchased from and slicked up by Mac1 Airguns.com.

I was worried my manhood might get questioned! Good info and nice to know my ideas weren't too far fetched after all.

My youngest really wants to get her own gun. I'll keep those targets as suggested. Also there is a monthly air gun shoot that is kid friendly not too far from home. It appears a bunch of folks here just can't be bothered to get the PAL and shoot pellets instead of 22 rimfires.

My most-used lever actions are Feinwerkbaus (pistol and rifle) with side-cocking levers. I try to shoot at least 3 times a week and of course, most of that is done with the air guns. Only problem with my practice time with the air guns is that they have a better trigger than anything else I own, so the practice with them doesn't correlate 100% with centerfire shooting.

Those are the highest regarded air guns I read about Earl save the 10M Olympic rifles that they make alongside some other famous companies!

I suspect my Weihrauch trigger will be sweeter than my Winchester, Marlin, or Lee Enfield triggers! It is the adjustable one they call the Rekord.

I chose the HW35E because it still has the locking breech to assure the break barrel locks up the same every time. The side levers seem to be a problem as I shoot left and the lever is on the wrong side.

The old HW35s were very nice air rifles, and I suspect the new ones are still as good. Lucky is the person who gets to learn on a 35!

An older thread got me to recently re-equip myself with the closest thing I could find to my light and handy - but long-gone - Beeman R7 (an early Santa Rosa, skinny-barreled, non-safety version), and I ended up with a Weihrauch HW30S Deluxe. It shoots so much better than I can see that it has caused me to re-evaluate my resistance to scoping a springer.

I almost bought a HW30S. I suspect my girls will learn on one. How smooth it out of the box?

Is it hold sensitive?

This one is pretty smooth out of the box, but like so many things, I believe there was a bit more care lavished on the old Weihrauchs and Beeman/HWs. There really isn't anything not to like on it. Well...

There is one thing, but it isn't the air gun's fault: I really dislike safeties on air guns. I understand the rationale in this day and age and will probably grow to consider it normal... but in the meantime, I keep forgetting to "click" the safety to the right. That is the only beef I have with this 30S, and it is really just a "convenience" issue for an old creature of habit. Old dog, new trick.

Walther make a very decent wood stocked model 94 Winchester based air rifle pwered by twin CO2 cartridges. These were selling for $198.00 at the local Sports Authority a few years ago then they skyrocketed to over double the price. Wish I grabbed one when it was lower.

When I was on the island of Okinawa, we had monster cockroaches, too.
And they flew! Wing covers clattering like some antique Sikorsky, they
looked like nothing so much as armored air cavalry as they mushed through
the humid night air.

Monster cockroaches with a Daisy, eh? :o

I plumb blew off the last question; sorry about that. I can't say that my 30S is NOT hold sensitive, but the shooting so far doesn't seem to indicate that it is fussy.

FWIW, I did leaf through an "Airgun World" magazine today and saw there was an article on the HW30 as a "beginner" air rifle. I've never read that particular publication before, but may go back and pick up a copy to see what is going on in the UK.

It's creepy enough when they are spotted crawling in the open. When they get airborne that's when everyone FREAKS OUT!
It's very rare that I can kill them with one BB hit, they are like zombies taking multiple hits and even when cut in half still dragging their half-body along. :o The only thing that worked pretty consistently though VERY messy was shooting them with my Crossman 1377 air pistol pumped up ten times but no pellet, just the air. Get within a couple inches of the muzzle and the air pressure alone blows them to bits.
