348 Winchester--light bullets

Interested in a varmit load for my Browning 71 Carbine. Are 150 gr bullets available? I know Winchester used to offer it with 150 gr bullet.

Just for up close varmits and tinkering.

You might wanna watch Winchester ammo this year . Seems the "new" Winchester Company is offering a standard and deluxe model of the 71 this year as a nostalgic kinda thing . Dunno for sure if they're offerring any loaded ammo but keep your eyes open one never knows !

Hawk makes a 165 grain JFP in .348". That's the closest thing I know of to the original 150's. I'm not sure if anyone loads it in their ammo line. You might have to load your own.

Back about 20 years ago I had about 4 or 500 of the Speer 180 grain from the 60's. They were the most accurate bullet I ever shot out of several Model 71's. After shooting up 200 or so, they just languished in the gunroom so I sold the rest right here a couple of years ago. Oh well.----------Sixgun

[Malamute]

I load .350" round balls over 3 or 4 grs of Unique or Red Dot. Makes a decent grouse or bunny load at fairly close range. havent worked on the load much, a little tinkering may help it some at to fine tuning the charge. Makes about as much sound as a standard (not high vel) 22 LR.

I have a few cast bullets I'm going to fool with. I'll be looking at something in the 1200-1300 fps range for a very mild, not too noisy load for small game and fun.

Many a rock chuck have met their maker with the RCBS 348-200 (210 in WWs) @ 1900fps. at up to 200 yds. That bullet is the best of the lighter cast bullets that I have used. It is available commercially for those that don't cast. http://www.montanabulletworks.com/348_Rifle.html It's the bottom bullet. Custom jacketed will cost at least 5 times as much.

Do you recall the load you used?

I never got around to testing it, but Pet Loads had a load for 348 using the Speer 180 gr flat point that was the most accurate of the many tested if I remember correctly.
