Marlin Bore Size???

Post by Moondawg »

Does anyone know why the bores on later model Marlins with ballard rifling, in particular the 1894s, seem to be such a generous grove diameter?

To make it harder to shoot normal sized cast bullets... :(

I had to rebarrel my 94 44 Magnum 24'' Cowboy it's groove size was .4335 shoots better now with a 26'' Green Mountain octagon barrel and with a slightly faster twist of 1 in 36 and a groove diameter of .430. loves Hornady 240 grain XTP's

Missed that the first time around, looks like a pistol caliber Quigley rifle type affair.

Did you mean 1 in 26...?

How did you find a gunsmith you trusted enough to do the job...?

These guns were brought out mostly for the cowboy action shooter so Marlin lawyer proofed 'em. They wanted to make sure about any .44 caliber bullet went out the end with a light load. Like Nicknack, I had one of those that slugged .433 and Marlin told me it was "in spec". The best it did was 5" at 100. I sent it back and they put on a.432 barrel. I dumped it and have not bought a new Marlin since.------------Sixgun

The Green Mountain has a 1 in 36 twist as opposed to Marlins 1 in 38

Quote from Green Mountain/Track of the Wolf "octagon Barrel, .44-40 caliber, taper #1, 27" long, 1-36" twist, 2.92 lb, .422" bore, .430" groove, .875" breech, .750" muzzle, .96" diameter stub"

We have an old gunsmith out west of Brisbane (Ipswich) that is slow but good.
I can't praise Green Mountain barrels enough they are excellent!

Mt. Baldy, Carolina Cast Bullets and Beartooth can cast them to .432....maybe larger, not sure.

I sent a 1894 SS .44mag. back due to oversize bore.
They re barreled it and had it back to me in 16 days and that was over the Christmas holidays!! It came back with proper bore size and shoots just great. :D

Now ,that was back when it was still made by Marlin.
I have no idea how they do it now that Remington is involved.

Mt Baldy will size to .433 thou it didn't seem to make much difference in my Marlin... the Green Mountain barrels sound interesting.. another project for my retirement........Les

I am currently dealing with two rifles having oversize bores. One is a Marlin Cowboy in .44 Magnum, the other an original 1873 Winchester in .44-40, both slug at .431". Since I cast my own bullets, I am hoping to resolve accuracy problems by ordering a custom oversize 205 grain bullet mold from Accurate Molds. It should arrive shortly, we'll see if that method works...
