What is this?

Post by TedH »

Went for a little road trip with my lady yesterday, and while cruising some back roads I hadn't traveled before we happened upon this structure located right next to an old rail bed. Kind of looks like grain storage, but I can't figure what the rooms on top would have been used for.

It's an old grain elevator.

Definitely an old grain elevator. What the top floors were for I can't answer.

The Headhouse on the elevator houses the grain transfer machinery and dust collection equipment

I agree with Beaker. Grain elevators are fed by augers, I expect the upper level was just a walk area for the crews to move the augerhead from one silo to the next.

Grain elevators are fed by belts with buckets on them. Known as "legs". The equipment is in the head-house.
