Storage cans?

I've been looking at some of the surplus ammo cans.One of the local gun pushers has some that are 31 inches deep x 6 inches wide and 11 inches tall.My twisted brain thinks I could break down your average bolt gun and with maybe foam inserts store it , ammo and tools.Barrels of about 22 inches with a 9 inch actions,stocks under 31 inches which means I'd have to do a little trimming on length of pull on some of the plastic ones. But what would I use to preserve them for long periods of time?Local guy says regular charcoal would do the trick? Not so sure.

Those are the cans I keep my primers in.
Yes I have a lot of primers, also powder.

Was storing tents in some but sign of the times I think they may have a better use.

Alterntively, you can take a CO2 fire extinguisher
and fit small tube and run tube to the bottom of the
can with the lid almost shut. Blow a lot of CO2 into
the can so as to purge the can of regular air and moisture
then yank tube out and shut can quickly.
OR
Put bunch of dry ice in bottom of can and close the lid
very loosely so that when the ice melts and turns into
CO2 it will blow out under the gaskets and purge most
of the air and moisture in the can out.

I purchased some Brownell's gun storage bags with their dessicant sold for that purpose. Others I know are using that clever CO2 trick and PVC pipe (although I've never tried it), sealed with regular threaded ends for more permanent, tough storage.

CO2 it will blow out under the gaskets and purge most
of the air and moisture in the can out.

I'd worry that the coldness would cause condensation, rendering the air-displacement counterproductive...

I dont think it would be a problem because as the CO2 displaces
some of the air, the overall relative humidity in the can will
decrease below the dew point so that moisture will not condense out. Plus, moisture in the absense of oxygen
will not cause corrosion. Moisture is merely the catalyst
that promotes the oxides to form between FE and O2

In any case the moisture content after the procedure
would have to be a lot less than normal due to the CO2
displacing the air containing moisture.

could install a schrader valve and pressurize with argon. just make the installation so the valve cannot be knocked off. abt 5 psi would work great. that way they can be submerged and will preserve whatever's inside.... see, wetlands and swamps are good for some things...
