Converting an 1886 from 45-90 to 40-65 (Pics Added)

Post by geobru »

Other than a barrel, what changes would a guy have to make on the internal parts of an 86 to make this conversion?

Would the carrier and cartridge stops have to be changed out to allow for the shorter case? I figure that someone here must have done this at some time or another. I know that a lot of 40-82s were converted to 45-70 by reaming the barrel, but I have never heard what other changes were required.

I have heard that you can shoot a 45-70 in a 45-90. Will the shorter cartridge cycle in the 86 action? If so, a 40-65 cartridge will most likely cycle with no parts changes.

Is a conversion from one caliber to another with an 86 as simple as screwing on a different barrel? :?: :?:

Anyone know?

Shorter length cartridge, but I don't believe that any changes would be needed to insure proper feed and function. Most 86s will accept any cartridge, except the .50s, and cycle them through the action.

I agree with Mike D. Shouldn't matter as long as you stay away from a 50.

Just to be sure, I just ran some 40-65's cartridges through one of my 45-90's. No problem.

I have an '86 in 45-90 and it cycles 45-70 just fine. Don't know about the 40-65.

Even a .33 will cycle a .45-90 into the chamber but only so far, of course. :)

My 1886 .45-90 chambers and shoots .45-70 just fine. From what I have read about the 1886, this has always been the case.

If I may ask, if your 1886 barrel is OK, why downsize the cartridge from .45 to .40? :?:

Good question crs!

The barrel on this gun was turned on a lathe to make a pseudo half octagon half round barrel. It is cut off at ~20", and has a shortened magazine. The magazine attachement is a funky cobbed together setup that I haven't warmed up to. The gun was buffed and reblued, and is strictly a shooter. I got a deal on a shortened 40-65 octagon barrel with a good bore, and couldn't pass up on the chance to put this gun back into a more normal configuration with a full length mag tube albeit a shortened barrel.

mmm, see what you mean about the eye appeal. Looks like a real handy "shooter" though.

You might want to try a few rounds of your target ammo through the action and see how it goes.

You got that right!

It ain't very pretty, but it is a good shooter with 325 grain bullets.

I figure that I got my money's worth shooting all bubba'd up. Time to make it look more like an 86!
