Bought a new "truck" levergun...with lousy phone pics

I bought a new "truck" levergun this weekend (this forum is bad news). It's a Rossi 92 in .357 Mag, stainless, 16" barrel. Overall the build is good, was surprised that the action was smooth, the color of the wood is nice, the fit of the stock is ok (where the wood and the metal meet it's tight on one side and has a small gap on the other). There are some tool marks, I like the all-metal recoil pad :) , the front and rear sights are serviceable too, but I like the William FP receiver sight better, so that will be my next purchase.

The only cosmetic issue that I see is the area where the barrel and the top of the receiver meet (see lousy phone camera photo) it's not square--this may be an issue, we'll see; although I cycled 8 rounds of Speer Gold-Dot 135gr. hollow points through it twice and loading, feeding, and ejecting were good, the bullets were not deformed -- didn't shoot said bullets, just cycled them to test function. Going to order some fluff & buff parts from STEVE'S GUNZ today.

Yeah I know it's not a vintage Win.92, nor is it a new Winchester 92 from Japan, looked at both--only could afford the Rossi, sold my Win.94AE to cover the purchase. So I will be taking the '92 out shooting this Friday and we'll see--in the end I bought it as a truck gun... :)

Just remember that it's made out of stain"LESS" steel... not some fabled stain"FREE" stuff! Nice lookin' shiney gun! I like the wood too!

Series 400 stainless actually has a high carbon content and it WILL rust.

That area thats not square may not affect function, but i guess you will find out when you do the range test --- if it shoots them 30" to the right or left at 20 yards, then you might have an issue

That is one of the handiest and most practical leverguns out there - for truck, home, or horseback...!

You got no reason to look down in another man's presence for buying that gun. It's a good one.

It's got a couple cosmetics flaws, but that's just personality.

Just think how happy your truck will be.

I agree-- Win.94AE's are fine guns, but didn't shoot it for a long time (lost interest)--I really like reloading for pistol cartridges and the .357 mag has turned out to be my favorite (have a Ruger SP-101 & GP-100 in 357). I also hunt with a Marlin 1894 in .44 mag (don't own a pistol in that cartridge, because to be dead honest I really sucked with it after 25 yds, traded the .44 mag pistol to get my Rem-Marlin 1894c in 357 mag) ... :)

I think you did real good with that little carbine. I reckon my Rossi blue SRC .357 has now become my most of the time truck gun. Hard to back off on my old 1892 Winchester 32wcf rifle as a truck gun, had it since 1953. You will really enjoy carrying and shooting your Rossi.

Congrats! i hear nothing but good things about the .357 lever, so i'm sure you'll have a hoot. They seem to all but fly off the shelves when they're in stock. That off geometry receiver has me a tad concerned tho. [runs off to check his recently acquired .454]

thought the same thing, in-service-training next month...all i need to do is have a bushmaster, colt, or s&w m&p tacticool logo on the side-plate and i'll be good to go...i'll tell the ranger officer that it's a retro-patrol rifle and it's nypd or lapd approved...probably need to attach a flash-light too...yeah that'll work... :)

they are great little rifles i have had one in my truck for the last 3 years the only time it comes out is to shoot or clean.

I currently use my .410 Snake Charmer as my "truck gun" for reasons of size and broad application. To me a "Truck Gun" needs to be more of a survival gun than anything, and really a .410 covers that role better than my beloved .357

However, I am looking to do an AJMD "Night Scout" treatment to a Stainless Rossi RioGrand .410 as soon as it makes an appearance (too bad it's 2-1/2" only though ).

Since a .410 isn't a "real" levergun caliber anyway, I figure I won't get struck by lightning.

I wonder if the Ramline "Trail Tech" 336 stocks will fit the Rossi?

Current truck gun is a Chicom rippoff 1887 IAC. That SS 92 is sweet.

Author, what great tastes you have in "truck guns"; I've got the same gun, but not as pretty wood ! Mine will feed .38 Special and .357 interchangeably, and is very accurate. It is one of the most fun guns to shoot that I own. Congratulations!
