Thanks Pitchy. That was a great film.
Here's another site about the dying role of being a cowboy, in this case "buckaroos."

Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
Those are great -- I need to go cut some horsehair... I would love to try that.
Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
That's pretty neat Pitchy.
Several years ago there were quite a few people around here that were waking in the morning to find that their horses tails and manes had been cut off. I guess this might explain it.

Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
That's a neat vid. I only wish I could braid and do the things the ole Buckaroos used to and still do. I grew up with horse hair pads, cinches and other odds and ends. Never could warm up to the the feel of it. That's why I don't use horsehair mecates. I know the why one uses a horse hair mecate, but I'll just need a little more time.

Tom Horn made lots of hair stuff while waiting to be hung. Some of it was on display in the "Cowboy Hall of Fame" in OK City. I know, they've changed the name but I can't remember it right now. Maybe Little Doc remembers.

If I were a horse in Pitchy's neighborhood I'd be mighty nervous about now. Hey Pitchy, Sixgun has horses.

Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
Those horsehair lariats and cinches are best handled with gloves. At least the ones I've had! They might not have been the best quality articles, but I knew they were handmade. I've often wondered if those "bristle" were responsible for some of the buckin' I've endured!
My favorite (also the hardest to manage), is a 45' riata (softened rawhide) I have. Next, and probably the 2nd hardest, is a 35' hemp rope. I had an old cowboy back in the '60s that wouldn't let me use a modern rope until I could handle that hemp one. When I finally got to use a poly rope... it was like "...too easy..."! Those old-time cowboys had skill. But, as with anything, they'd also had LOTS of practice.

Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
There were five men lynched in Lookout Ca. In 1901 for cutting horses tails. That wasn't the only reason, but was one of the main complaints against them. The bridge they were hung from is still there.

Re: How a cowboy makes a Lariat
THAK YOU PITCHY FOR THE FLIC...growing up as an urban-NY kid we never had any need for a lariat, cowboy hats, boots, or even horses, but i sure could bus and subway surf...we always wore black Converse high-tops though...like a cowboy, us kids sure knew when it was time to beat feet... :)
