Antiqued 1858

Sorry this isn't a lever gun but I thought someone might like to see my first attempt at antiquing a firearm.This is a Pietta 1858 Remington cap and ball revolver that I stripped with white vinegar (works great by the way) and then used Van's cold blue on it. After buffing with fine steel wool, this is what I wound up with:



I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Goes better with my new Uberti 1873:




Thanks for the advice some of you gave on this process. I was planning on trying to use a brown finish on it but am glad I didn't for now.

Pardon me, but that hogleg is a levergun. Yep, it's the loading "lever" right under the barrel. Cool gun.

Not bad.

When I was doing the finish on my Winchester 94 build I used Vans and then rubbed it out some with steel wool and then added a little bit of Birchwood Casey Plum Brown on it also.








You have to keep it oiled pretty good for a couple of weeks so the plum brown stops fuzzing up but then it gets a good look to it.

That place on the front of the receiver was where the vise jaws rubbed some of the finish off while putting the barrel on.

Rube- the finish on your Winchester looks great! That is what I wanted my revolver to look like. For now I'm content with the look but may try some browning solution on it this spring. Too cold right now to do it outside

If it were mine, I think I would make the grips look a little more used to match the aged look of the rest of the gun. But that just my opinion.

+1 - including a least some darkening. I had a factory aged Cimarron Model P "Cavalry" that some steel wool did the trick to take off the grip's sheen (in that particular case). The grips already had *some* factory aging applied, a couple dings here and there, just not enough

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how to age the grips. I tried rubbing some dark axle grease and dirt into them but it didn't take. I could just stain them darker.... anyone have any better ideas? I'm all ears (or eyes in this case)
