OT-Old Knife

Post by Dastook »

I’m a knife nut too. This old knife was my dad’s. When my dad was a young boy, circa 1925, he would stop at the town blacksmith shop when walking home from school. This was in Bear Lake Valley, Idaho. He would help the blacksmith “turn the forgeâ€

That is super cool.....great treasure you have there from your Dad! Almost any penetrating Oil will work. I have taken a liking to Ballistol as it is non-toxic.

Great knife!
I have been using Break Free CLP for most my needs, but then again living in the Mojave desert has it's benefits and rust is not one of them

I have a couple of old handmade knifes that were my granddads, but do not have the history about them like you do.
Great treasure you have there.

If you are going to use the knife on things you'll eat, olive oil is best. Don't keep it in the scabbard. The tannic acid in leather makes steel rust big time.

What Swampman said. +1

I make knives and what I do to a lot of them is to rush a patina to the blade. I use apples, tomatoes, mustard and other things to get a look to the blade of Grandma's old kitchen knives. It works like rust bluing. It'll still rust if you leave stuff on the blade, like blood. But it acts like bluing and protects the blade from most stuff. Plus it adds a nice patina.

Here are a couple from my grandfathers farm certainly older than 1941. They are forged with no maker or brand and appear to be excellent carbon steel. With them is a stag handled steel. They may go back as early as 1913.

Turning the forge would have been cranking the blower. A blower is what replaced belows in supplying a coal fire with air. Alot of knife collectors coat the blades with renaissance wax and than oil it. Neat knife
