Mitchell's Mausers making new guns

Post by madman4570 »

Guys,
In American Rifleman (Feb 2012) because of the depletion of their (Mitchell's Mausers) K98 guns, they actually have started a new Manf. Corp of their own based out of Serbia (yes,a new K98)
They(American Rifleman) tested it and appear to be quite impressed.(open sights 2" groups @ 100yds off sandbags)
They even let it slip they are in the process of making some sporter/hunting versions in a couple different calibers and also different stocks(synthetic and such)
Appears they should (Retail)in the $550 Range????
Sights are adjustable from 100-2000 meters
Great article and I am waiting to see if they offer one in 30-06/.308/7mm :D

Cool. The K98 is a sweet rifle. One made in 30-06 would be a good thing made better.

Those Zastava made 98's are well made. Hope it works out for them.

Agreed. The Mauser actions have been coming out of there for years. Setting one up as a milsurp-that's-not-surp wouldn't be all that hard. The stock patterns, sights, and everything else all exist and are known quantities.

Rather like the company that was trying to make new Lee-Enfields.

I wonder if the new actions will be full length 98, or the intermediate length 98 that were built after WWII for Yugoslavia-Serbia??

I would be moderately interested in a military reproduction -- that sounds cool. Not so much a "sporterized" version though.

But at $550, aren't decent real-deal Mausers floating around at that price? - Maybe not , i dont keep up with the C&R market that much -- but at least with a new repro, you could shoot it til you brain melts and not have to worry about breaking something i guess

One in 308 would be tempting! I wanted one of the Israeli ones in 308 a few years back but they were shot to death.

They've been selling a "tanker" k98 for some years now. I've held them and they're typical nice Zastava manufacture, but they've been putting some really ugly yellow birch or beech on them that looks like ka ka compared to the walnut on real k98s.

With like new Yugo M48s available out there I think the only advantage would be getting one in .308.

What about a new k98 in 7x57 in a sporterized model? Composite stock and scope mounts and it would be a nice little rifle for deer with a good mild round to start kids on.

How about any number of commercial variants in 7mm-08 (Weatherby youth VAnguard for instance, Howa 1500, plus the various budget oriented Remington 700's , Savage, Stevens, etc.) -- the inferior lock time of the MAuser compared to any number of commercial sporting rifles today makes something modern possibly a better choice for that application.

But on the flip side, none of us would even be looking at this website if we weren't fans of old technology that modern "experts" say is obsolete

I have a Stevens in 7mm-08, and love it. I would like a Mauser in 7X57 just because.
