Uberti 1873- 1 of 1000?
Hey Guys, new to this forum, so please bear with me. About a month ago, I stumbled on a old friend who had a rifle for sale. It was his deceased brothers gun. It is a Uberti/Navy arms imported 1873, sporting rifle, highly engraved, 44/40 and marked 1 of 1000 on top of the barrel. I have found out that it was made in 1975 (AA) code. His brother special ordered this rifle and 2 pistols to go with it. They sold the pistols a few months back. This rifle has never been fired, and is in near perfect condition. Has a light ding in the buttstock. Rifle has blondish wood and has the straight stock with no checkering. The receiver is gray with beautiful scroll engraving, blued barrel. Does anyone here know much about these rifles? Value of these? I saw one on Gunsamerica a few weeks back with a price of $2500.00. Your thought's? I don't have a picture of it as of now, but will get one soon. Thanks for your thought's.

First, welcome to the forum. Second, someone on the forum had one of those, but I can't remember who. Maybe it was Barbarosa. They'll chime in if they see this. I received a straight stock Uberti '73 in 38 WCF two Christmas' ago and it was like $1,100. I think one engraved like the original 1 of 1000's would be hand engraved and probably worth around $2,000. Possibly more. They're sweet rifles for sure. I'm still wringing mine out.

Thanks for your reply, I forgot to add that it is hand engraved, and is signed by the engraver. The buttplate is engraved, lever, hammer, front of barrel around the sight.

I can't decide whether to keep it and shoot it, or sell it and get another shooter.

I watched the one on gunsamerica, I would have had more interest if it was priced at $1500. not at all saying they are not worth more, but if I bought it it would be a cowboy shoot gun.

You've got an awful lot of $ value tied up in "purty" there. Unless you really really want it to look at I'd sell that one and get two "shooters" complete with the sights you like best for them, along with loading dies and plentiful supplies. But that's me: everything I've got gets shot, and along with that gets handled by grandkids and other less-than-reliable types...

2nd... I don't have a clue about your rifle's value. But, follow along while I apply my convoluted logic to figuring it out; 1- that's approximately 2/3rds more than the MSRP of a new Uberti clone, 2- IIRC (which can be sketchy) in 1975 a new Uberti 1873 clone was ~$450 and that 1 of 1000 was ~$200 above that. So let's say the std 1873 has about tripled in value, so too I should think your 1 of 1000, possibly a bit more. However, before I would pay that, I'd want some substantiation that the rifle is in its original state, sales receipt withy descriptive info, original box, tags, etc., at the very least a period catalog w/pics showing details to match to the rifle. A 1975 (or '76) Gun Digest shouldn't be terribly hard to track down.
I've heard folks say that clones aren't "collectible."
